Hi there. My MSI GTX 970 recently gave out so I am looking for a replacement card. I mostly do 1080p gaming at max/ultra settings, however I might want to do 1440p in the future.. My question is, is it worth paying an extra 100 dollars to get a 1070 over a 1060? I am currently looking at the MSI GTX 1060 Gaming(6GB) which is going for $300. And for 1070's I am looking at the EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 SC GAMING ACX 3.0 Black Edition and the NVIDIA Founders Edition both of which are going for $400. Any help in choosing between these three cards would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

My current setup is as follows:

Intel i7 5820k
Gigabyte UD4 mobo
8gb DDR4 ram(need to expand :))

Personally, I'd opt for a 1070 for ~$100 price increase, but not a lot more. The problem with having an eye on the "next" tier is a 1070 is approx +$100 vs a 6GB 1060, but then a 1080 is only approx +$100 more than a 1070

The 1070 is going to max out titles a little longer - there are some titles that a 1060 is a "high" card only @ 1080p. Although a very, very strong 1080p offering, if your goal truly is to move to 1440p, then the 1070 is going to be more "fit for purpose" at that resolution.

Yeah it seems like all the cards are overpriced at the moment unfortunately. I see you're all suggesting I go with the 1070 over the 1060. When it comes to the 1070, which of the two options would be best?

EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 SC GAMING ACX 3.0 Black Edition

OR

NVIDIA - Founders Edition GeForce GTX 1070

At their core, they're the same GPU. The ACX3.0 is definitely the better cooler, but the FE cards were better binned IIRC(?)

If you have a spacious case with good airflow, the FE card might perform a little better (with an Overclock), but if you just want a card to drop in there and run with, the EVGA card is likely the better option.
