Gtx 1060 zotac mini OC thermal throttling

My gtx 1060 is thermal throttling at 65 degrees or so, I get up to 2070 mhz then it down clocks to 2035 or so when stress testing. It sits at a steady 71 degrees. I've replace the thermal paste with a ARCTIC mx-2.

That's normal behaviour for 10-series cards due to the nature of GPU boost 3.0 AFAIK. I wouldn't really call that throttling, you're still well above rated boost clocks

That's been my experience with my old GTX 1060 also. Now, the GTX 1080 Ti is the only one I'm aware of that thermal throttles in increments starting at lower temps.

not a zotac one...but i know the evga tech support say the 1060's shouldnt throttle until they hit the 90's.

strange yours would throttle at mere 60's.

Yes, but I wouldn't consider it as thermal throttling the way most people think of that term. You can see real, noticeable throttling occur when you hit the set temperature target, and then further when you hit the thermal limit of 95C.

That is not thermal throttling, it's gpu boost maintaining the highest possible clocks as longs a conditions will allow. What you can do is try to manage the conditions inside your case.you can add fans or increase rpms to your intake /exhaust setup

Yes, it does. But we can't call that throttling. It's reducing factory boost/overclock to maintain thermal conditions as the chip heats up and the GPU heatsink becomes saturated with heat. It's 2-5% drop in performance at most when you reach 70+c, no need to be concerned about it. The only thing that can keep it at bay is water cooling it.

The fact is they are implementing throttling in GPU Boost 3.0. You may not think of it as throttling because it is already boosted past and it doesn't go below the stock clock rate , but nonetheless the frequency at which it was operating is being reduced a.k.a. throttled.

It's a drop of 12.5MHz in increments starting at a much lower temp than max temp.

Whether it's due to temperatures or power, it's still throttling. The only thing needed to be differentiated is that it is GPU Boost 3.0 throttling and not the max temp/thermal throttling.

When GPU Boost is operating (boosting and throttling) the GPU is guaranteed at least stock clocks. On the other hand, thermal throttling at max temp is more significant and can throttle below the stock clock speed to prevent heat damage.
