I am considering buying a MSI GTX 1070 GPU and a ASUS VG248QE 144hz monitor, I'm looking to play games like overwatch, titanfall 2, and battlefield 1 at max settings. Will this combination work?

Yep! I've had the same monitor for going on 4 years and have used it with a R9 290x and now my GTX 1080. It'll work just fine for the 1070.

TN panels have improved since 2012, at this point I'd consider the VG248QE as outdated personally, as I've used one too.

Ive also got the same monitor, I am pleased with it and the upgrade from a crappy led 60 hz was substantial... in my case.
It requires some tinkering with the settings to get a decent picture at 144hz...
