So everyone knows the 1070 is overkill for a 1080 fps experience currently. But my question is, since I don't have the time to research it myself effectively...

Will this card become obsolete when the 20 series comes out, also when does the 20 series come out. I have a friend who wants to build a PC with a 1070 but is worried he will spend a ton of money and be obsolete (he will game at 1080p to start going to 2k later).

I personally had this experience the 970 went from maxing every game at 1080p to struggling on arma 3 for 45-60+ fps on full servers. Also for example Dawn of War III a not very graphically impressive game I can't max out with a 970 at 1440p. Yet I can Dawn of War 2 which IMO is a better looking game. Just wondering if "new" games will run like shit on the 1070 after the 20 series comes out and when does it come out? If its going to be after this summer may-august please let me know, if its going to be this summer also PLEASE PLEASE let me know.

I'm personally waiting for Vega but these are questions for my mates system as he doesn't have one and wants one for the summer months.

Solution
It will be like any card, as time goes on you will have to keep lowering the settings to maintain your desired fps.
You shouldn't have an issue with very high/ultra for a couple of years though.
The 1070 won't become obsolete when the next series of cards come out.
A card becomes obsolete when it can't run the games you want to play at a desired fps/settings, or when driver support is completely killed off.
If you want to run the latest AAA games at ultra 1080p i wouldn't say the 1070 is overkill.
Arma3 is a poorly optimized game that runs like trash on any system.
DoW3 is still a pretty new game and would probably need some further driver optimizations.

No one knows when the next graphics card series are going to be officially released.

Nobody will know for certain until the next-gen GPUs come out. At the very least, you can expect Vega to give a kick in Nvidia's 1000-series' pricing if successful.

Launch-wise, some people say later in 2017 for Volta but most say early 2018. As with any GPU though, you can stretch GPUs for quite a while if you aren't obsessed with running everything at Ultra+.

@ShadyHamster and @InvalidError thanks for the information of the release and opinions of the card. In your opinions for future 1080p gaming and 2k gaming is the 1070 a good choice still keeping the future releases in-mind.
