I know this or similar has been asked in other threads and other forums but I’ve had no luck with getting it to work and hoping someone has an answer.

I have an NVidia GTX 1070 founders edition that I just got used. My motherboard is an Asus Crosshair v formula, not the z. I have an r9 290 that works fine with it and I decided I wanted to go for a 1070. So I got the 1070 in, placed it in the pcie the 290 had been using and powered on. I get no display, no post beep (yes speaker plugged in), and the diagnostic led on the motherboard stays lit at vga. The fans on the 1070 come on and if it sits I can feel it get warm. I’ve tried all the display ports, the dvi, and HDMI outs. I’ve tried it in other amd 990fx motherboards with same result. I brought it to a local shop and they put it in an Intel system and it works fine =\

I have an old HIS 4670 that doesn’t require power from the psu as I only have 2 pcie rails and the 290 requires both to run so I put it in the first pcie slot and the 1070 in the third. It posts to bios with the 4670 loading a display but nothing on the 1070 display. BIOS shows both the 4670 and 1070 as being in the pcie slots they are in. I can also load into windows with the 4670 displaying, go to device manager, and get the 1070 to show up. I tried installing the latest drivers this way but on restart still no display and it shows the 1070 failed/has a problem. If I uninstall the device and then make windows detect hardware, it loads drivers for the 1070 and the displays actually start working, until I restart and then same problem.

Things I’ve tried that I can remember:
Tried in other amd 990fx mobo, even different system with different psu

Brought to local shop with Intel system and the card worked

Used DDU in safe mode to remove all drivers

Put 1070 in pcie 1 and 3

Tried both 8 pin psu rails

Reseated everything multiple times and reseated ram in different slots and 1 at a time. Also tried cpu reseat

My bios is the most current version for my board and doesn’t have many of the options I’ve seen on other posts like csm, etc.

Tried with peg/pci and pci/peg, tried with pxe on and off

Fast boot off in windows but no option in bios

Sorry for a long post but I am at a loss why it works on an Intel system but not amd board that it is known to work on

Any help is appreciated

*Edit*
I knew I forgot something, specs:
Cpu: FX8350
Mobo: Asus Crosshair v formula bios 1703 & Asus Sabertooth 990fx r2.0 bios 2901
Dram: Corsair vengeance 1333 16gb
Psu: Corsair cx750m
Monitors: acer s241hl x3
Current gpu: xfx r9 290 dd

The 2 mobo and 2 os are the ones I’ve tried

What are the system components? The first thing that comes to mind is that the AMD driver probably isn't getting fully deleted. Particularly if the GPU driver is mixed in with the rest of the AMD drivers for the motherboard. If you can delete the entire AMD GPU folder.

Here is an article on getting rid of old driver remnants.

Another more generalized article on the same topic.

http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2032150/installing-graphics-card.html

On the graphics driver, download and install the driver directly from http://www.geforce.com/drivers. Choose the custom install with the clean install option. Don't use the windows drivers.

If your system has integrated graphics, go into the BIOS and force the graphics source to integrated. Then connect your monitor to the motherboard video outputs. Then with the GTX 1070 installed open up the device manager/display adapter menu. Then check to see if the GTX-1070 is listed as the graphics card. Also note if the generic display adapter is listed with the GTX-1070.

If the GTX- 1070 isn't listed, there is a problem with recognizing the graphics card. If the GTX-1070 and the generic display adapter are both listed, there is still a device recognition problem. Try reseating the graphics card. If that doesn't fix the issue, try updating the motherboard BIOS. Then check the device manager again. If it is still missing, try reinstalling the operating system. Once it is detected, update the graphics driver and proceed from there.

I edited the post with specs at the bottom, it is an amd set. I did a full uninstall with ddu but maybe it missed something so I’ll try again. What i can’t wrap my head around is that drivers could stop it from even posting/seeing bios.

I can get to windows with my his4670 installed and it sees the 1070 in device manager with basic device driver, if I uninstall and update it loads the right driver, shows 1070, and displays work until I restart. I get the newest driver from GeForce direct but when I install it I have to restart and it has the same problem and shows the device encountered a problem in windows.

As for gpuz, with with basic driver installed it shows just 1070 with vendor nvidia but no board specs like memory etc. if I uninstall basic, search for hardware, and windows installs the driver then gpuz reports all correctly.

I have it uninstalled at the moment so in a couple hours I will pop it back into the system and post gpuz

Also again bios is as current as I can get on this board and no onboard video so I use the his4670 to get to windows

Tried windows reinstall through the shift+restart menu with the option to keep personal files and reinstall windows. May try a fresh install on a different drive today

Ok so I set up my Asus Sabertooth 990fx r2.0 to see if I could get it up and it’s easier moving the cards around with an open setup

I installed windows 8.1 64bit to have a clean install with no amd drivers or such. Pulled the latest GeForce driver and installed and restarted. Below is a link to imgur showing gpuz before driver install and after. After install the 1070 showed a problem so I disabled and then enabled through device manager and the display for the 1070 popped up.

I also reflashed my bios for the heck of it with no luck
Also on the crosshair board I get no beep and just vga led. On Sabertooth board I get a beep but still just vga led and no bios

Makes perfect sense to me but is there a fix? Lol. I know these boards are compatible with the 1070 because people are running them.

I looked at that but if you look at the imgur of gpuz posted you’ll see it’s the same bios but shows 50 instead of the 1e on techpowerup which I think is just the hex representation or such of the 50. I’ve been tempted to reflash it with that techpowerup one even though I think it’s the same. Just afraid of bricking the card and losing what I paid for it.

I appreciate the question. I thought about it but as the card is technically working just not with my system and it was a personal seller with no return period it’s just mine now. Unless I can figure out some way to get it working I have to either resale it or keep it and hope it works with ryzen when I upgrade lol
