I'll be living in the us for a year (from Australia) and would like to build a new PC that I can take home. Parts in the Aus are crazy compared to that in the US so I'm hoping to get hi slightly overkill build that will last very long so I won't have to upgrade.

I was originally planning on the 1070 without even thinking 1080 but got a deal for a 1080 for $430 so I was considering it over the $390 for the 1070

With a $1400us budget I'm able to fit in the GTX 1080 and a pretty cheap 23.8" 1440p monitor. Ideally I'll like to spend way less, but I would if it's worth it.

I'm also wondering if I should just do a GTX 1070 and a nice 1080p monitor whist saving some money. I don't think I need a 144hz monitor as I don't play anything that reaches that high fps.

Either way I will even be impressed with a 1080p monitor as I have never used one before or (maybe seen) as I currently have a crappy 20" 1050p monitor.

I'll even consider the 1080p monitor with the gtx 1080

Which should I go with? Should I forgo the 1080 deal?

Well, if you can get 1080 for only 430 then do it! Its very cheap. Also yes, 1080 is "overkill" for 1080p 60hz, but so much future proof.. Imagine new games that will come out in 6 months/1 year or 2. You will save a lot of money later on.
100hz+ monitors only worth for people who play fps/competitive games.
Also i have used 1080p/1440p monitors, difference between 1080p and 1440p is less noticeable on 24" screen than for example 27. So if you looking to save money then get 1080p. So the best option would be 27"/1440p or 24"/1080p - Its just my personal opinion.

Thanks a lot make, I think you have me pretty sold on the 1080p. Question, I saw a 25" 1440p refurbished ips monitor for $210. In your opinion would you get it or stick to a 23.8 ips 1080p?

As i said, i personally would go for 1080p bellow 27"... 210$ is not that bad for 1440p IPS panel. What is respond time? Make sure its 5ms or lower. Watch some reviews on it on the internet before buying.
