GTX 1070 or RX 580?

I have a 1080p 144hz Freesync, don't play a ton of modern (<3 years old) games mostly Battlefield 1. Coming from an HD 7870 and powered by i5 3570k @ 4.1, which GPU is a better fit? Price isn't really an issue but I'd still like to be smart about it.

Or should I just wait it out for Vega?

580 or wait for Vega as you want to be able to use Freesync. FYI your CPU is going to limit what fps you can get with any gpu in cpu heavy games like BF1

I'll probably be going to a Ryzen 1600x or 1700x later this year. I know there have been issues with DX12 and Nvidia's current card range, is that a limiting factor especially w/ my Freesync monitor?

Depends on the game to be honest, just like DX11.

DX12 is quite complicated matter. just because we see nvidia cards barely benefit from DX12 it doesn't mean they are bad. DX12 is more like AMD closing the gap between nvidia and AMD. it is common knowledge that AMD cards need more raw power to match equivalent nvidia card. Fury X vs 980ti for example. that is 8.6flops vs 5.6tflops (6.7tflops if you count the regular boost clock for reference 980ti). but DX12 did not always give AMD the lead even when they have raw performance advantage.

Well the i5 3570k bottlenecks in BF1 at 60 - 100FPS during multiplayer gameplay, so the RX 580 is the better choice as it averages 91 at 1080p Ultra quality.

Recent driver updates from Nvidia have boosted DX12 too. There really is little between a 1060 6gb and 580 in DX12.

As for this choice Id rather Freesync than not, its a big benefit.
