It's essentially all in the title but I'll elaborate.

I'm eyeing up the GTX 1070 as the next upgrade to my PC but am unsure whether it would be "overkill" for gaming at a resolution of 2560 x 1080.

I have already got a 21:9 monitor as it was the best solution to a problem that I had.

Would the 1070 be a wise choice for gaming at this resolution or is there another cheaper alternative that would still allow me to play games at a solid 60fps.

My current specifications:

MSI GTX 970 Twin FROZR V
Intel i5-4690k
16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 1600 Mhz

My monitor is: (unsure if relevant but am including anyway just incase)
LG - Ultrawide 29UM68 Full HD 29" IPS LED Monitor

when u r in game, i would ask u to check the GPU/CPU usage. if the 970 crossed 80% usage, yes a 1070 is needed. some issues may crop up due to the game itself. not all games support 21:9 natively.
but yes, if u have the cash and want a 1070, go for it.

There's no doubt that 4gb vram will not be enough in some games @ 2560x1080px, the 970 is still a respected card, but you're gonna be able to feel a massive increase in performance with the 1070.

Yeah, although the 970 is a great card it has issues playing at 2560x1080. It can easily handle 1080 x 1920 however from playing other games in 21:9 ration I'm addicted and since I've recently came into extra cash I'm thinking of making the jump up.

There's no doubt that the 4gb vram is not enough for all games, we even had someone who is using a 970 @2560x1080px confirm it.
