I am sorry if this is not the right thread, I wasn't sure if it should go in cpu, ram or graphics thread...
So long story short:
Pc built in 2013 had fx 4130 and gtx 650 with 8 GB 1333mhz ram
2016 I upgraded the PSU, mobo, the cpu to an fx 8370e and gpu to gtx 1070..and 2 ssds. same ram but bought another 8Gb so now 16 gb . THEN I SAW CPU BOTTLENECK
A couple of months ago I decided to go intel but didn't have that much money so wanted to at least keep ram I bought. So I found a very cheap i7 4770 (non k) The new motherboard is a unused ROG Maximus Ranger VI.
From the stock 3.4ghz with 3.9ghz turbo on one core, I now got it thanks to the brilliant mobo, to 3.9ghz on all cores, all locked all the time at 1.184v (and even that is -0.040v less that what the mobo wanted to give it).If I give it any less v it is still stable but gives slightly lower geekbench result. Now during summer it runs at 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) in idle, and 48 degrees (118F) while gaming Bf1 64 Server which is by far the most cpu intensive game I play, so everything else I am doing an my pc is under that temperature. I am on air with Schyte Muggen cooler and 9 fans making a storm down there. The cpu isn't delided yet, but I am thinking about doing it.
Thanks to the mobo I can OC further via Bus (I got to 4.2ghz locked on all cores easily) and of course the Geekbench and other tests showed higher results and even then didn't even exceed 55 degrees. THE PROBLEM is, that starting with 4,0ghz the pcie 3.0 becomes 2.0 x16.. Did some benchmarking and results are inconclusive..most scenes in gta5 are better with cpu at 4.2ghz and pcie 2.0 but one scene was a lot worse..(pcie bottleneck). In bf 1 I don't really notice a difference (it's hard comparing online matches) although I expected there to see the biggest difference because it's tho only game that brings this cpu to 100%..So 4.2 ghz or 3.9ghz both have framedrops and dips (75 fps max locked to monitor refresh rate) to like the 50s but not like the fx 8370 in the 30s or even 20s.
My gpu usage in bf 1 on ultra maxed out on 1080p Monitor is between 40-60% at 50 degrees Celsius. So:
1) is it worth it to oc above 3.9 ghz and lose pcie 3.0? Also the cpu will die faster at 4.2ghz even if I stay below 1.2v and under 55 degrees?? (e.g electron migration at low temp?)
2) Is maybe my Gskill 16 gb dual channel 1333mhz 9-9-9-24 DDR 3 ram (the only component I didn't change from the initial 2013 pc) my bottleneck? Would I see massive improvements if changing to DDR4 2400 or above?
Note: the Ram is just partially in dual channel. Mobo only supports dual channel but I got a 8 GB stick and two 4 gb..because I couldn't find the exact model /latency at 8 GB when I bought the second 8gb. Cpu z says everything is fine and lists dual channel.

Solution
Unlikely, ive still got 2500k and 2600k that have been overclocked their whole life, no issues at all. CPUs rarely fail, even with overclocking, unless you are really doing it wrong.

Either way, I would advise against the the bclk overclocking on this platform.
I would sell the 4770 and get a used 4790k, youll be able to overclock properly using the multi. Overclocking like your doing can have very undesirable effects due to forcing other components to run faster than the 100mhz they were designed for.

You cannot use DDR4 in your system, it only takes DDR3, but a faster speed would be beneficial.

Do you mean the Maximum VI Extreme, or maximus VII Ranger. I don't see Ranger VI.

Also, on the PCIe 2.0 thing. Even a high end card won't necessarily saturate the bandwidth of 2.0. So you can compare online results, and if there's much of a difference, revert back to 3.9/PCIe 3.0 and test to see what that difference is exactly for your machine and if that's worth the 300mhz increase in clockspeed.

To RobCreez: I know DDR4 is incompatible.. I meant if it's worth changing the mobo again because the Ram is too bad.
The problem is that I don't want to buy used unlocked chips cus who knows how long and at what extreme oc they ran.. They may fail on me on the 2nd day. That's why I bought a non k the first time.. (it was also a bit used but he said not much and most probably only ran at stock 3.4ghz cus not many know/what to oc via Bus). And the biggest problem is that a NEW unlocked 4770k or 4790k or even i5 4670k or 4690k where I live costs over 300€ and I'm not going to spent that when I know that's the price for coffee Lake cpus. The sellers know these are the last /best processors on ddr3 so they know desperate people are going to spend more..cus it's still cheaper than buying new gen cpu + RAM

To Keith12.. That's what I thought too..that pcie 2.0 x16 should be enough but why that one particular scene in gta got so much worse score?
You are right it's Maximus Ranger VII.

Solution

Totally agree. Never liked the BCLK OC and what it can do to other components! Ughh!

There are a couple of scenes in GTA V that are notorious. The Vinewood scene in particular will cripple even a GTX1080 and suffer big drops. It's notorious. One or two others too. I wouldn't consider GTA V indicative of a problem though. Just a crappy port.

Oh man thanks! How can I pick you both as the solution? 🙂 you both seem to agree on the no-no for bckl OC.. .. I should pick RobCreez cus he was first but I see that Keith12 is still young (500 solutions) so I want to give him a helping hand.. Please no offence Rob.
I will wait and save money next week's/months I can buy a (preferably new) i7 4790K ant then I'm gonna delid and liquid metal it and with my fans I should be able to go to 4.8Ghz and keep my pcie 3.0..
PS the only strange thing I noticed so far when oc the bus is that I always had to unplug and replug my keyboard or else it would type other characters than pressed if it worked at all.. The mouse was fine though...

Yeah you get all kinds of weird issues when raising bclk as youll put things like the USB/sata/pci-e controller out of spec.

Good plan getting a 4790k. Do you have a good cpu cooler?

:) Give it to Rob. I don't answer to get upvotes/Solutions. Just to help! :)

Glad that I did help! :)

At the moment it seems I can't pick any solution..(I'm on my phone, when I press Pick as solution it just refreshes page... Also I have no quote button) I have to wait until I get home at pc.

To Keith -ok I'll give it to Rob
To Rob- I have the Scythe Muggen 3 but I modded it and added 30% more mass/fins to it and it also has not 1, not 2 but 3 strong fans attached (2 in push pull and 1 at the side, the other side is bigger because if the extra fins, so I couldn't add a 4th).. I also used liquid metal between ihs and cooler. (I bought it for between the die and ihs but couldn't cut it open with a razor and delid tools were out of stock).. In addition to the 3 cpu fans I have 6 others in the case.. They are all Arctic f12..(only noctua fans are better than these) With all Dust filters removed I simply cut holes in the metal side and top panels. It was a basic midi atx case.. Now it's a Frankenstein.. And of course it's not silent but I don't live under my table so while gaming I don't hear it... I think it moves the entire volume of air every second.. A bit like https://youtu.be/EM2G5vLGcQQ
