GTX 1070 vs RX480+120Hz monitor

The title says it all. I'm currently running an i5-6500, 750 Ti and a 1680x1050 60Hz monitor. I have a budget of $450 USD, and I can't decide whether to get the beast GPU, or get the RX 480 and a 120Hz monitor. I want to be able to play at med/high settings at 100+ fps. If I go for the 1070 I won't be able to change the monitor for a year or two.

Why buy a monitor when you can't fully utilize it would be my first question? You want to be able to play what at 100+ fps? Honestly and I say this without sounding like jerk but for $450 that isn't going to happen. What you want to do will cost you closer to a grand maybe more.

from the sounds of it, a 480 at $250-300 should be able to handle 1080p at those levels for many games. won't know for sure until they are out and tested. for now you'll have to sit tight and see how those cards go. you can read a bunch of 1070 reviews until then and see if it will even be able to do what you want it to do. i assume you're thinking 1080p as a 1070 won't do it at 1440p anyway.

not really. an rx 480 plus a new monitor would be the way to go if you ask me. i would HIGHLY suggest getting a new monitor and you can get something decent for around $250 for sure. either a 1080p TN 144hz monitor or a 60hz 1080p IPS

No one can say for sure until benchmarks are out, but based on speculated RX 480 performance I'd imagine it could manage 100+ fps at 1080p/medium settings in many games.

I am aiming for 1080p 120Hz, I don't care if I don't get every game on ultra settings. I am comfortable with med/high settings as long as I can get past 100fps -I've been told that there is not * a mayor* visual difference past 100fps-. I am also OK with disabling AA. Do you think a GTX 970 could achieve this? I am taking into account the 970 because the RX 480 is supposedly faster.

that monitor looks just dandy to me.

as for the GPU, i have a damn good feeling AMD arent stupid enough to release a card that isnt at least as fast or faster than the gtx 970. the rx 480 will be a safe bet for sure.

It's fake 144hz, it's a 60hz panel that "runs" at 144hz, google the model and "frame skipping". I almost purchased it but was lucky to find a post on this just before I ordered it.

Thanks, but all I can find is people saying their monitor were working like that because of a failed batch or something. There are also people who say the monitor runs at full 144hz with no frameskipping. Here is a review of the monitor that says it's 144hz

It is technically 144hz, it runs in the 144hz mode, it just doesn't give you all of the frames. If it was a bad batch, I still wouldn't trust them personally. That's why I went for the BenQ XL2411Z, it may be worth taking a look at that, I'm very happy with my purchase.

It's like $110 USD more expensive than that AOC. I found a VG248QE by $25 more than the AOC. From what I've heard is a pretty good monitor.

A lot of people love the Asus monitor you mentioned, although over here (UK) when I was purchasing, they were both only a £20-30 difference over the AOC. The 970 is a very capable card, it will be able to run a pretty much constant 120 fps in most games, I use a 980 (not much of an improvement over the 970) and it runs everything I've played so far very smoothly.

What CPU do you have? I can't seem to find it listed anywhere here, so sorry if you already said.

I have the G-sync version of this AOC FreeSync monitor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824160273 with a 780ti and just love the combo. The color is really good and I can still produce high fps/hz/settings which is required to get the full better than 60hz gaming experience (life changing for me and can never go back).

A 480 and this monitor will give you the AMD version of my setup for much less and you should get almost identical performance with both parts. Personally I'm going to keep this monitor for a while and eventually update to a 1070/1080/1080ti as I've had this GPU for over 2 and a half years but am still feeling patient due to great performance still.

I say go for the monitor first. no point in spending all that money on a graphics card that you can't fully utilize for another 2 years, by then a better graphics card will be out. Monitors don't get better at as fast a rate as the graphics cards do.
