Hi !
Today I encountered a problem for the first time, and it looks really bad 🙁
I was playing Overwatch, and the game crashed with the message "out of video memory". I used to play longer than that and I never had this problem before...
So I downloaded GPU-Z to see if I was really running out of video memory :
I'm using a KFA2 GTX 1080 EXOC 8 GB, and I can see in the GPU-Z software that the memory size is 8192MB
I played Overwatch and it instantly crashed "Out of memory" when i joined a game,
GPU-Z results
: it crashed at 3082MB VRam used...
Same with Fortnite "out of video memory", I played 5mins and it crashed when the VRAM hit 3080MB

Now I want to know if my GPU Vram is broken 🙁 , or if it's just a software problem

Thank you for reading this !

More details :
My computer (everything in it) is 4 months old
It worked fine before
I don't remember doing anything or installing anything before it happened;
I did update my driver after i met this issue, same problem
GPU temperature looked OKAY when it crashed
I did try restarting my computer
CPU : i5- 8600K
RAM : 16GB
GPU : KFA2 GTX 1080 EXOC 8GB
Memory type : GDDR5X
No overclocking, cause i'm not an expert and I don't need this

Updating Windows 10 likely fixed this

Make sure you have a Paging File set in Windows.

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/how-to-manage-virtual-memory-pagefile-windows-10,36929.html

It should be set to AUTO.

I have had an instance where Windows had it set to OFF. If you want to set it manually (not necessary, Windows AUTO option is ideal) the general rule of thumb is half the size of the physical RAM you have installed. In your case, 8GB since you have 16GB of RAM.

I only suggest this as an option since I had a similar issue with a game - 16GB RAM, 6GB VRAM on my 980Ti, but getting game crashes and a Windows message about "out of memory". That's when I checked the paging file, it was set to off. I set it manually, restarted the computer and no more "out of memory" issues.

You could also try running other games to see if the issue is consistent across multiple games.

Thank you for your answer ! :)
The "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" is already checked
I have the issue occuring with 2 games and I will try 1 or 2 more
My issue is "Out of video memory" on both

Thank you for your answer =)
So I made some research on what bios I have, and then I checked what was the last version on techpowerup.com/vgabios for my KFA2 GTX 1080 EX OC and I already have the latest version.
I updated my drivers, and I still have the problem 🙁
Little update, I tried again and it crashed at 2700 MB vram usage so it might have nothing to do with the 3GB cap I mentioned in the title :S

Check the card's temps and RAM/GPU usage before the crashes. If the temps are super high it's likely a cooling problem but if not it may just be a faulty card that could be warrantied with the manufacturer. Also, maybe a BIOS update or checking the BIOS settings for the GPU would help. You could get MSI's Afterburner to also check various stats on the card.

Is there any chance that some other (possibly unwelcome) software is also using video memory? If, for example, you were infected by a coin miner, it might use video memory, but also be able to hide itself from some utilities. Use MalwareBytes and/or Roguekiller to scan your system.

I restarted my computer multiple times and it didn't help, then I updated Windows 10 and the issue disappeared ! I reached 4GB VRAM without any problem, hope it will not happen again...
Thank you all for your help
