Hey guys,

Just ordered my new build minus the graphics card since I'm waiting for the release of the GTX 1080. Here is the build so far: i7 6700k Skylake, MSI Z170A Mobo, G.Skill Ripjaw DDR4 16GB, Corsair 850w PSU, and Mushkin 1TB SSD. Now for my question, is the founders edition of the GTX 1080 somehow going to be clocked faster or better performing than the other 1080 cards being released next month? I only ask because it's priced $100 over MSRP. Thanks.

Here is a quote from nivida on the differences between the founders edition and previous reference cards from other generations. I dont know why its more expensive, I cant seem to find any reason.

"Relative to previous NVIDIA designs, we have upgraded the following areas: The power supply has been upgraded from 4-phases to a 5-phase dual-FET design and tuned for bandwidth, phase balancing and acoustics. We added extra capacitance to our filtering network, and optimised the power delivery network on the PCB for low impedance. As a result, power efficiency increased by roughly 6% compared to the GTX 980, and peak to peak voltage noise was reduced from 209mV to 120mV for improved overclocking."

"The GTX 1080 uses a vapour chamber...
I highly doubt it, from my understanding the founders edition is just a reference card which uses slightly better components than the previous generation's reference cards. I would expect the non reference cards from evga, msi, asus, etc to perform the same or slightly better in terms of overcloking and performance. Not sure however.

They used expensive stuff making it look good, while also using a good blower rear exhaust cooler (which is very good in cases with poor airflow or SLI configs), but for most of us with good airflow, the custom coolers like MSI Frozr, EVGA ACX etc will likely result in lower temperatures for less money (the cooler on these founders editions must be expensive to make).

I think the extra 100 is just so there is reduced competition with there distributors. The card is meant only for die-hard supporters of Nvidia or people who just prefer the reference design. Nvidia doesn't want to force Zotac to receive less business so they have the price mark-up as a way to seperate enthusiasts from regular consumers.

"The GTX 1080 uses a vapour chamber cooling, a first for a sub-250W NVIDIA designed graphics card. Finally, we have a new industrial design with a faceted body and a new low profile backplate. The backplate features a removable section to allow better airflow between multiple graphics cards in adjacent SLI configuration."
