Currently doing a new Ryzen build and my GTX 1080 recently got in. Decided to test it out in my current rig to make sure it works, as I don't yet have all the pieces to start up my Ryzen, and posted appropriate scores in benchmarks (firestrike, timespy, cinebench) so I was pretty happy. Decided to start firing up the games next and that's where the trouble started, with games such as BF1 64p conquest (DX11 and 12, both terrible results), AotS, all running far below what they should, usually in the 30-40 FPS range regardless of settings, and GPU usage would hover around 0-20% in both MSI Afterburner and EVGA Precision. I suspect this is largely related to memory (see rig specs) but I don't think it should have *that* big an effect. No temperature issues in either CPU or GPU.

I got to wondering and plugged my PC into my 4K TV and fired up BF1, and the 1080 responded very happily to the increased workload, posting 50-60 fps at 4K medium settings in 64p conquest maps, never dropping below 40.

Rig:
i5-3570K @ 4.6 GHz
EVGA GTX 1080 FTW2 @ 2000+, usually hovers around 2100 if I crank the AC
Patriot Viper 8 GB DDR3 @ 1600 MHz (used to have 16 but the other DIMM died recently)
Asus P8Z77 V-LK
Samsung 840 PRO 128 GB
Seagate 1TB Firecuda (1st Gen)
Seasonic SnowSilent 750 Watt
Monitor: Samsung C24FG70 1080p 144Hz
