Why would anyone need a GTX 1080, I'm not saying it's bad to have one or anything but is it not a complete over kill for everything. Or is there acutely any benmifits other then having a bad ass GPU

the 1070 is a far more attractive option until the 1080ti comes out. the 1080 is currently overpriced and any performance increase over the 1070 can easily be gotten back by lowering unecessary AA levels down which for the most part are not needed or noticeable, especially at 1440p or higher resolution.

well I wouldn't put it like that.

but yes for 4k there's no way past it.
and for 2k / 165Hz I'd recommend it as well

however if you're running a 1080p screen you're right.
the 1080 is severe overkill and doesn't provide any benefit over a 1070.

Barring a lottery win, I'll never spend more than $300 on a graphics solution, but if you're playing at high resolutions across multiple monitors at high or ultra settings and expecting to get high FPS, then yes. You would want a GTX1080 (or two) in your set up.

I've got 2x gtx 1080 in each of my pc's, after selling both my gtx 1070 as it wouldn't cut it for 1440p 144hz or 4k at playable frames. My main pc has 4k which is more for editing/render, but I do like to game as well. gtx 1070 couldn't hit over 30 frames in most newer games. My media pc (kids game pc) has 1440p 144hz, which 1070 wouldn't hit over 90 frames in anything new'ish' as well.
