Hello!

I have this problem since I got my GTX 1080 a year ago where its not performing as good as it should, performance wise, bad framerates and stutters

Overwatch Epic settings with the 1080 in my rig: ~120 fps
Overwatch Epic settings with the 1080 in my brothers rig: ~220 fps
Overwatch Epic settings with my brothers 970 4GB in my rig: ~100-120

Far Cry 5 highest settings with the 1080 in my rig: ~40-50
Far Cry 5 highest settings with the 1080 in my brothers rig: iirc ~80-100

Black Ops 3 highest settings with the 1080 in my rig: ~70-90
Black Ops 3 highest settings in my brothers rig: ~110-140

Monster Hunter highest settings with the 1080 in my rig: ~60-70
Monster Hunter highest settings in my brothers rig: 80-100

I even tried my GPU with my borthers PC, we have pretty much the same specs and it performed way better, the funny thing is that his GTX 970 runs better than my 1080 on my rig.

The only thing that I can think of is that my mainboard is not giving enough power to my GPU.

I've tried a lot of things already.

Things I've tried with no success:

  • Remove the my CPU Overclock to stock

Adding 2 more fans to my a CPU fan and case

    Reinstalling Windows 10

Removing GPU-Drivers with DDU and installing them again

Change RAM slots form 1 & 3 to 2 & 4, try only one RAM and tried my brothers RAM (One interesting thing that I noticed is, that my motherboard doesn't detect my 1600 mhz RAM it only detects it as 1333 and to get 1600 I have to activate XMP to get them to 1600, but it did detect my brothers 1600 perfectly without no XMP.)

    Updated my Bios

Removing my Monitor overclock back to 60hz

    Tried my brothers PSU

  • My Specs:

    CPU: i7 4770K overclocked to 4.5Ghz @ 1.2v

I really appreciate any kind of help, Thanks in advance.

If you need more info about something just tell me. I hope I explained my problem well enough, if not just tell me!

Solution
Is the ram running at 1600MHz in both system? Don't just look at the stats of what is in both, you need to verify that they are running the same speed.

Yeah my bad for that, I mean performance wise, bad framerates and stutters

There is something worng with my rig, I'm thinking its my mobo.

Could be the motherboard, have you updated bios.

Yes to the newest available version.

Have you tried your brother's ram?

Yes I did try it and it didnt make a difference, I even tried his ram with mine together and no difference.

Haven't turned off Hyperthreading because of overclock?

I reseted my overclock to stock and it didn't make any difference, got the same performance as with 4,5ghz. But I can test it, do I find it in the bios?

Thermal throttling

Switching Intel Speed-Step on and off didn't make a difference.

Reinstalled Windows completely still didn't make a difference.

What exactly do you mean by that like in games or in the nvidia control panel?

bios/driver that needs up/down dating
Updated everything to the newest version. When downgrading which driver could cause this?

You need to find that difference.
That's what I am trying to find but no success, maybe just keep looking and I'll find it eventually, if not I have to upgrade my PC.

Ahh okay!

Speedstep doesn't control temps. You need to figure out what the temps are, not make sure speedstep is on.

Yes. Control panel might be set to game decides. When checking performance you need to always make sure Vsync isn't running. You need to check the game and the drivers/control panel to make sure it's off.

You should see what drivers your brother is using if his performs better. You should also make sure everything is setup the same. You have mostly identical machines. Is your GPU in the 16x slot? SSD setup the same way? Ram running at the same speed? Look for any difference between your machines and figure out why it's different.

My temps at 4.5ghz and 1.2v are:
~40 °c idle and ~65-75 °c it depends on the game.

My temps at 3.5ghz (Stock) are:
~35-40 °c and ~50-60 °c depends on the game.

I always make sure that Vsync is off in game and in the nvidia control panel.

Is your GPU in the 16x slot?
Yes.

SSD setup the same way?
Yes, we have the same ssd.

Ram running at the same speed?

Yep both my and my brothers at 1600 mhz no difference in performance whatsoever.

You should see what drivers your brother is using if his performs better.
I'll check that and get back to you. Thanks for your help!
