i currently have a pc with a i7 4790 and gtx 750 with a gigabyte ga-h81m-h motherboard. Should I upgrade to a 1070 or 1080? please do not refer to any other cards thankyou.

I would recommend the 1070. IMO the 1080 still isn't quite ready for 4k, so paying the premium for the card isn't worth it. Go with the 1070 and when you are ready for 4k there should be newer cards out that will handle it better.

Well, if you're in 1080p 60Hz I honestly wouldn't do either and would go for either a 1060 or RX 480. A 1070 would be underutilized in that setup. You could take the money saved and apply it towards a 1180 or whatever is available by the time you do upgrade to 4k.

If you have a 1080p 144Hz monitor the 1070 would be a viable choice, if not slight overkill for some games.

As far as the possibility for future 4k, really the 1080 is the only option there, but expect to settle for around 45 FPS or drop a few settings.

I just picked up a 1070 for full HD and it's absolutely brilliant. With intelligent management of your settings it would probably do fairly well in 4K as well.

If your motherboard supports SLI, you have the funds and you absolutely can't live without ultra settings at 4K60 in Battlefield, then get a single 1070 now, and add #2 when you get your 4K monitor.

It's an option but like someone earlier in this thread suggested I would go with a 1060 if you are already planning on getting something from the 1100 series as well. The 1060 averages 82.7 FPS at 1080p. Knowing that I can't recommend spending any more than the price of a 1060 for 1080p/60Hz gaming. By the time the 1060 can't max out games at 1080p the 1170 you are already planning to upgrade to will be here.

I love my Gigabyte G1 1070 on my 1440p monitor but I would not recommend spending the extra money for 1080p gaming unless you have a 144Hz monitor.
