Hey I have not seen a thread for this question yet and I want be sure before I commit to one or the other but I currently have a 2k 144hz monitor and a gtx 760. My 760 cannot run anything 2k really (as expected). I wanted to get a 1080 as I didn't have to upgrade for a while and I wanted to play with some vr in the future. I talked to a friend however and he said to go with a 1070 and upgrade in about 2 years. Which one should I go for? I was leaning towards the 1070. Thanks in advance.

The best rule to live by when it comes to buying PC hardware is: if you want something, buy the best thing you can afford at the time.

There will ALWAYS be something better on the horizon. If you keep waiting, you'll wait forever.

If you can afford it now, get a 1080. If you cant afford it, get a 1070.

Both will do what you want them to, but the 1080 will do it better.

But I live in Canada and the 1080s are $200 more :'( know any good sights I can look for good deals? I don't mind refurbished

The 1080 is much faster than the 1070, and so will cost a lot more. That just comes with the territory.

Again, go with whatever you can afford. If the 1080 is too much, then go for a 1070 - its still a very capable 1440p card and with a few tweaked graphics settings will get lovely smooth framerates above 90fps.

It totally depends on your budget and what games you play. It also depends how important being as close as possible to 144 FPS is to you.

I have a 1070 paired with an i5-4690k and a 2560x1440 (2K) 165Hz G-Sync monitor. Overwatch and Rocket League are the two games I play most but I also play most of the big releases. My PC manages about 180 FPS in Rocket League and 120-135 FPS in Overwatch with maxed settings depending on the action on screen at any given moment.

In Doom I get about 100 FPS most the of the time but some demanding AAA games are between 55 and 80 FPS (which is why G-Sync is nice).

Neither the 1070 or the 1080 is going to run games like The Witcher 3, Fallout 4, and Hitman with maxed settings at 2560x1440 with 144 FPS.

I am personally happy with 60 FPS in most AAA games as long as I can get 100+ FPS in competitive games. If that sounds like you than a 1070 is enough. If you want to be as close to 144 FPS as possible in every game you are going to have to consider the 1080 or maybe even a Titan X Pascal.

the GTX1070 is more than enough for 1440p. like king3pj I also crush Rocket League and Overwatch but they are not very demanding. I'm playing BF1 at 85+FPS with all setting maxed at 1440p which is also a great number! no need to spend $200 more, especially if you are planning on upgrading in 2 years!

the gtx 1080 isn't as powerful as people think as I thought that on the 1080 release and was majorly disappointed with it when I used 2 gtx 970s in sli and bought a 1080 and the fps rates dropped dramatically
