Hello,
I recently bought a GTX 1080 , brand new, from a stock clearence promo ; the product is the one form the below link :
Checking the manufacturere's website (http://www.kfa2.com/kfa2/graphics-card/10-series/kfa2-geforcer-gtx-1080-exoc.html), i notice, the following :
  • Base Clock (MHz) 1657
  • Boost Clock (MHz) 1797
However, i installed MSI Afeterburner and I started to track the output and what surprised me , is that during gameplays, the core clock goes sometimes up to almost 2000 mhz ; I am confused, shouldn't 1797mhz be the max value ? I did not touch anything else in Afterburner, no OC, nothing . All in all, the GPU runs prfect for now, I tested it aprox 60 mins in SW Fallen Jedi, no crashes and 80 - 85 FPS on 1080p, ultra details ( might get some bottleneck due to my i5 6400 )

Solution
You are perfectly fine. What you are witnessing is GPU Boost 3.0 . When there is sufficient cooling and power your GPU will overclock itself and the 2000 mark is not uncommon for a GTX 1080.
If the GPU overheats, will lower the core clock to keep cool.

Oh, I see. But in order to take advantage of the GPU Boost 3.0, do I must keep Afterburner running, or is related to the actual nvidia driver and will trigger regardless of Afterburner running or being installed?
