Hello Guys,

My 1 month old build (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cxMqFd) is causing stutter and FPS drops in all games. I have been playing CS:GO, Overwatch and PUBG and observed these massive stutters in all games. I am attaching the graphs from HWMonitor which can show these drops. I tried reinstalling the drivers but that didnt work.

I have eliminated that ram isnt the issue as the health check results are good, same case for CPU and hard drives. Unigine Heaven bench mark result for GPU is around 4400 but also observed the fps drops and stutters during the benchmark.

CPU temp and GPU temp under max load is 55C and 70C respectively.

Things I have observed during the stutters:

1. GPU Load/Utilization, GPU bus interface, GPU Frame buffer drop to 0 and return back normal (check graphs)
2. CPU temps increase +10C during these stutters
3. All CPU cores were running at normal clockspeed but there was a massive drop in clock speed of all cores at one instance of stutter.

Things to try:
1. Perform clean install of OS.

Update :

When I switched my gtx1080 from first PCIE slot (PCIE2 - PCIE3.0 x16- which is closer to the CPU) to second PCIE slot (PCIE4 - PCIE3.0 x4), all the stutters, lags, audio drops were gone.

GPU-z graphs recorded at a different time than the above HW monitor but you can see the drops here too

So, I had a hunch that my CPU fan was not properly installed because while installing the fan, I removed the cpu fan several time without re-applying TIM. So, back of my head I knew that was the problem. I was correct because when i removed the CPU fan, there was no TIM at the center of CPU.

So purchased Arctic Silver 5 and TIM remover kit and reinstalled the CPU Fan with new TIM.. also made sure CPU pins werent bent.

There are NO FPS drops or stutters now, there are no GPU /Frame buffer / Bus interface drops too. hope this helps someone in future

Apparently its nvidia drivers? DPC latency are all over the place! I didnt notice this earlier.

Again tried DDU and installed latest nvidia drivers .. that didnt fix it.

Upgraded Bios - Didnt help!

Disabled HD audio drivers, ethernet drivers - Didnt help!

max performance is set in nvidia control panel and windows power settings.. still seeing DPC latency issues :(

Please help!!!

I'm having the same issue. I just got gtx 1080ti 2 days ago and I'm having sudden stutter and it happens randomly while gaming, I'm a first time pc builder and I'm not sure if its a faulty gpu or its the cpu that causing this!

I had same issues. I play BF4, everything was fine and suddenly this terrible stutter hapen after installing a new mouse (however not sure if that was an issue). I tried to change video settings from ultra to custom to low. It randomly stuttered on all video settings. Turning Vsync on seems to solve this problem. (I tried to limit fps in game but that did not help).

My system, i7 6700, GTX 1080, 16 GB DDR4 RAM, 256 GB SSD, 2TB HD' 2560x1440 at 144 Hz.

I get lags/stutters everywhere not just in games/3d applications. Even my mouse pointer lags when dragging it on desktop!

vsync didnt fix my problem but when I switched my gtx1080 from first PCIE slot (PCIE2 - PCIE3.0 x16- which is closer to the CPU) to second PCIE slot (PCIE4 - PCIE3.0 x4), all the stutters, lags, audio drops were gone.

I am not sure what's the issue in PCIE3.0 x16 (1st slot). I am guess its a bad pcie slot? or a hardware peripheral is sending a flood of IRQ's to that slot? i am clueless.

@shravanpn7 thanks for getting back to me. Turns out I had a bad PCIe. Putting my graphics card into the second slot fixed everything. I had spent so many hours going through all the same trouble shooting as you and much more. Take care.

Last week saw one of Windows 10’s largest updates yet with the 1607 patch, aka the Anniversary Update. Along with the usual sweep of fixes, security updates and rebooting your PC in the middle of a work day, it also auto-enabled Microsoft’s Xbox-powered Shadowplay-like recording software GameDVR. While this is useful if you have both an omni-powered PC and plan on sharing clips quite regularly, it could be causing some major stutter. Particularly affected seem to be Valve’s games.

If you’re interested in the techy side, do check out our dedicated PC hardware coverage. Dave’s the best.

You’ll need a Microsoft account to disable it the normal way, which goes like this:

Open Xbox app, you can access it via the start menu search.
Sign in - this should be automatic if you normal sign into Windows.
The cog in the bottom left access the settings menu.
Head to GameDVR at the top and turn it off.
If you’ve found you’re experiencing framerate issues in the last week, that should help it. If you don’t have a Microsoft account, you can disable it using the registry. Via the Dota 2 subreddit, here’s how - and a small reminder that making a Microsoft account is probably easier and less risky.

Open Registry Editor (Run > regedit)
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\GameConfigStore
Set the value of DWORD "GameDVR_Enabled" to 0
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\
Create key "GameDVR"
Create DWORD 32bit called "AllowgameDVR" and set to 0
That same thread also points out Nvidia cards have been having particular trouble, and there’s a new driver been released today. It’s game ready for a lot of this month’s big releases, including No Man’s Sky, Deus Ex and F1 2016, so get it downloaded via the Geforce Experience app or their site directly.
