Afternoon,

So I'm thinking of going to an SLI setup with my PC but am not sure on whether or not I can get my hands on another of my current card for a decent price. Sooo, I'm really looking for some thoughts and directions I should go in.

So first, here's a link to my current setup - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6jVT6X

Finding one of those cards new is about impossible. Used, well they basically want a new price for it. I'm assuming that's because of the 3 year warranty on most cards nowadays.

So the question really comes down to, what other options should I look at. I've thought of getting another 1080 ti with similar clock speeds that's non water cooled. That seems most logical considering my case constraints.

I've also looked at the other water cooled cards out there, but they are all running their own software, drivers, etc.. Don't know how they would end up mashing up with a card from a different manufacturer.

Solution

^ Now this sounds...

SLI is way more trouble than it is worth. You have twice the cost, twice the power required, (not to mention twice the heat to disapate) and twice the complexity of setup for less than twice the performance (and that is best case!) Not all games can or will take advantage of SLI (Some even perform worse than a single card setup!).

That may be a viable option. Hadn't thought of that at all. Have to look at the price points for the 2080 ti's then.

If that's the case, which seems to be from what you and the other individual have said about the same thing, then I wonder why they are still incorporating it into their cards.

Many new games don't support it. Until the 900 series (I believe), it was great if you wanted it. Now with direct12x it's not so great. I agree with the above. If you have to do upgrade, sell your old one and get a 2080ti. But I'm also assuming your pc runs great now and you just have the itch to upgrade.

Need, want, really it all depends on where I go with it in the future. I may very well get a 4k monitor, once they aren't a fortune when a slightly larger TV with similar refresh rates that's 4k is comparable or less than the monitors.

In the immortal words of Archer. Also, yes.

By that time your 1080ti's will be obsolete to future 4k gaming standards. Do you have any idea how much power is needed to run 4k?

If your throwing money around you may want to look into selling your card and buying another 1080ti from eVGA (hear me out). They have a setup program that should allow you to upgrade to a 2080 ti once they are out you will have to pay for shipping and the difference in price but may allow you to sell your card before the release date of the new card for a higher price.

The thing is I really don't, just had the itch to upgrade for no real reason other than to do so. From what's been said here about SLI, I may just end up with a 2080 TI instead soon enough, but stick with my current setup for a bit longer since I'm not fond of buying stuff as it first comes out and would rather wait and let them work the bugs out. Also, the price tends to drop slightly once the hype is over and everyone is already waiting on the next gen.

Not to mention the current lawsuit against the RAM manufacturers that my severely impact PC part costs in the near future.

That is worth looking into, had not heard they had an upgrade program. Possibly MSI has one as well?

^ Now this sounds more like it! I'm liking the logic.

Solution

I trust that everyone who's built/upgraded a PC in the past few years has had the same thought as I did. Which was "why in the hell does RAM cost so much now?"
That led me to find a class action lawsuit against the major RAM manufacturers for artificially inflating prices, which is the second time they've done it and been sued for it. FYI - They lost the first time too.
I'm marking your solution answer as the solution BTW.

Thanks to everyone for their input, got me thinking along the right tracks again and I really appreciate the insight into a realm that I've basically been out of touch with while I've been moving place to place for the past 12 years.
