simple Q

does the 1080 ti bottleneck with the i7 6700
for 2560*1440

mostly playing fps games and stories no mmo

The question is pretty meaningles The 1080ti. is overkill for your monitor. Unless you're going for ultra-fast refresh rates/frame rates, AND your monitor supports those refresh rates, you don't really need it.

A 1070 is good for 2560x1440 @ 60 Hz and max details. A 1070Ti or 1080 would be able to run faster at that resolution.

If your monitor's max refresh rate is 60Hz, for example, then going beyond a 1070 is probably just throwing away money.

EDIT: unless, of course, you run into some crazy deal where a 1070Ti or 1080 is less expensive than a 1070.

The 6700 is still a great gaming CPU, but that matters even less at 1440p resolution. When you move up in resolution, the bottleneck moves from the CPU to the GPU. This is why when you get to 1440p and 4k, there is very little difference in fps based on the CPU because the GPU has to work much harder at those resolutions.

I agree with KingV, if your monitor only has 60hz, then you should not get a 1080ti. However, if you monitor is a 144hz panel, then the 1080ti will be a great choice for first person shooters. You will have very high framerates making the game play butter smooth.
