Discussion GTX 1080 TI with i7-860

I recently had a friend buy a GTX 1080 TI for his system so he could play more recent games. I asked about the other specs in his system, and he told me, i7-860 (you read that right), 2 x 4 GB DRR3 800 MHz memory DIMMS, and a single 1 TB WD Caviar Black. He insisted for a long time that the GPU would fix everything. I finally was able to convince him that it wouldn't run any new games. After a while, I got him to get a Ryzen 5 3600, MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX, Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 MHz 16 GB kit, and a WD Black SN750 512 GB NVMe SSD.



Needless to say, he was blown away by how fast it was.

The Ryzen 3600 is far better then that i7-860 for gaming and multitasking but I think going from that HDD to a NVMe SSD was also a huge upgrade for him as well.

There was no way an i7-860 wasn't going to bottleneck a GTX 1080 TI. It's like using a garden hose as the air intake for a car.
