GTX 1080 vs GTX 1070

Should i get a gtx 1080 using all of my cash or get a gtx 1070, and a couple upgrades or save for SLI of a GTX 1070. Anyone know any comparisons of the two cards or one with the GTX 1070 in SLI?

I5-4690k devils canyon, 8gb ddr3 1600, Fatality z97, 500gb SSD, 1tb Hard drive. I am using a tv that has very low res for my monitor, refresh rate is probably very low. i would like to get into 4k gaming, mostly for games like Skyrim, Dota 2, Counter Strike a bit older games and being able to play new games such as Watchdogs 2, Civ 6, and other newer games at 1440p or at 4k for games that run it well.

1080ti is probably going to be about 800 and i have no GPU currently i was originally going to build my pc with a gtx 970 and then put off buying it for the new GTX 1070 and 1080 release. I wouldn't be buying till august so i have time for more models too.

And, honestly, you shouldn't get a 4k monitor, OP. Video cards are just not tehre yet, and i wouldn;t be so sure that even an 1080 ti would be able to properly do 4k. Plus, on monitors taht are upto and including 21:9 34" and 16:9 27" 4k is just too much resolution in both games and, more importantly, windows, where you'd have to use high DPI setting which sucks.
1440p is the sweetspot, and the 1070 can do that and has better price/perf tahn the 1080, so, get a 1070, and put that cash you save towards a 1440p 144Hz monitor that supports G-Sync, as G-Sync is a must, but it's costly.

Yeah i don't plan to go after a "4k monitor" but i wouldn't mind a 1440p monitor that can run run 4k at times, so then i can watch 4k movies or do very mild 4k gaming for older games. I just don't want it to be similar to the 970 when people bought it and then there was the whole 3.5gb thing. i am defininately waiting to see what AMD has to offer but i am heavily leaning towards 1070.

Saw that, i think my plan will be GTX 1070 in august, get myself a new PSU that is fully modular and can support SLI, new mouse and keyboard and work towards a new monitor. Get a new 1440p G-Sync monitor.

There is no suck thing. A monitor should always be used in it's native resolution. So it should be 1440p. But that's not a problem during 4k playback as, while downsampled, it's still enough resolution.
Obviously, waiting for AMDs stuff is teh way to go, espepecially since Nvidias stuff is way overpriced these days because of high demand. And that's going to continue for a month or more probably. "Early adopters" are getting ***ed big time this time around.

But i am wary of AMD, they kinda been keeping the whole 4gb rx 480 and the 8gb rx 480 thing downlow as they use the better more expensive one for benchmarks and the price of the 4gb for everything else.

I thought you meant waiting for AMD Vega coming in october that will compete with the 1080 and 1070. Some price cuts will probably happen at that point.
ASnyway, in a month or so, teh 1070 should come down in price a bit anyway.

I'm getting tired of playing Dota 2 at 30 fps and unplayable CSGO i would prefer to be able to play games again. but if Vega shows promises i might wait, but at that point i could wait another month for Black friday and get the cyber monday deals.

I've been looking around and i've liked the palit Rock star gtx 1070 premium edition, looks like a good piece of hardware, i just hate the whole back plate but my case is solid and has no glass window. I do need to check out my PSU though i worry about its 8pin connectors and i might sell it and get a full modular one as i really prefer to have less cables. But looking at the results a GTX 1070 SLI works very well for every game that i generally play except for those dx12 games which aren't that popular.

Looks like a good PSU, i am definitely considering it as its pretty cheap for a full modular PSU and has a good watt amount. Is it possible to enable SLI and hten Disable SLI to switch between DX12 and D11?

Enabling and disabling SLI is done through Nvidai control panel. The DX verion is game dependant.
And that is a very good PSU indeed.

I assume i can disable SLI at desktop or is that something i do in BIOS? I think that i'll strive for GTX 1070 sli while getting a good strong PSU, new mouse and keyboard, and then get a 1440p monitor with vesa support. Gaming in my hammock can't wait.

If you don't have a graphics card get the RX 480. It is 5-10% worse in performance then the GTX 970 but at a cheaper price, less power draw and more ram. It will also be compatible with AMD Freesync monitors. It is really cheap. The 4gb version is less then 200 pounds and the 8gb version is around 230 pounds which is still very good for price-performance. It will not play games at 4k however it can do 1080p and even 1440p in some cases. Good if you are playing games on one 1080p monitor which is the best way to game for now.

Nvidai Control Panel is the name of the setting utility for the Nvidia drivers and has nothign to do with the BIOS.
Thats where you enable SLI generally or on a per-game basis(you'll nwat to have it on generally and disable in games that don't do well wiht it)

But don't misinterpret my previopus posts: get a 1440p monitor and just one 1070 for now. WHen it starts to show it's age or if you want even more performance add another. Just get the proper 750W+ PSU from teh start, like i suggested.
