Question GTX 1080 vs RTX 2060

After 5 years my gpu finally died so I'm going to upgrade my GPU, CPU/MOBO and monitor.

There's a store nearby that has a MSI GeForce GTX 1080 8G OC ARMOR on sale for $504 CAD. They also have a couple of different RTX 2060 cards for $470 CAD.

My games are Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Far Cry 5, Elite Dangerous. I know the monitor is important, but I haven't decided between 60 Hz 1440p or 144Hz 1080p yet.

Advice on which card is better value?

so GTX1080 still that expensive? performance wise GTX1080 should be slightly ahead of RTX2060. but for future tittles it is possible the RTX2060 will end up being much faster than GTX1080 thanks to certain Turing improvement like the ability to run INT32 and FP32 at the same time.

1080 is faster, so, you will have to evaluate the "is it that much faster to be worth it' given the 2060's $370 (US dollars) cost....

If the 1080 is only $30 more, you'd have to determine if the 1080's 8% cost increase over the 2060 is at least accompanied with an 8% performance increase...(few like paying 50-60% more for a product with 4-5% more performance, common with i9 CPU costs these days....)

1080 for sure. Much better bang for your buck, faster and more capable. RTX is clearly useless and generally cuts your frames in half so its not worth it. Plus only a few games support it.

i don't think the 1080 as better bang for buck since the price of 1080 still a bit more expensive (for OP). even not counting RTX the 2060 is very capable. some of the newest tittle like RE3 remake and Metro Exodus the 2060 is pretty much on par with 1080 even at 4k. going forward the favor will move towards 2060 more with it's "turing shader" being taken advantage of. really it is a bit of a toss between the two for games that exist right now. 1080 surely the better choice if they are significantly more cheaper than RTX 2060.

Hardware wise the 1080 is vastly superior,
Driver, Architecture wise the 2060 is slightly superior, you might see some games perform slightly better on 2060 rather than 1080 because of this advantage.

I would still suggest 1080 especially for it's its hardware superiority.

If you want the latest and greatest shading techniques by all means get the 2060.:ROFLMAO:

2060 is between a 1070Ti and 1080. Between 2060 and 1080 in some games favour 1080 by a few more fps and other games they're almost identical.

Id go 2060 and put money saved toward a new monitor, ram or ssd.

Just get the 1080 just because it's on sale and i got enough vram to run demanding games. If you buy the 2060 you have around cad which is not enough for ram. If you haven't bought a monitor you could get a better one.

6GB vram is more than enough, hell wouldn't even use 8GB of the 1080. @ 1440p too, antialiasing isn't necessary so there again can minimise vram usage. Even with All the bells and whistles including strong antialiasing settings be lucky to reach 4.5GB at 1440p.

The GTX 1080 with no question is the faster more powerful card.

2060 is a good chip on bad hardware especially the RAM department as many suggested, it might seem so good for now but later down the road like 2-3 years ahead it will suffer badly where 1080 will shine having more stable fps output.

I don't think there will some major performance uplift in this price category for years to come unless you increase your budget.
