Okay so I have been reading a few threads on the Titan X Pascal vs the GTX1080.
I have built a general purpose PC that is in my living room. The idea was to future proof as best I can, bearing in mind the fluid nature of PC tech. I will be surfing, watching 4k movies and TV shows, Gaming on latest games and some futures games like Star Citizen. I also have a HTC Vive and am expecting as better developed titles are released I will be using more and more. PC consists of Intel i7 6700k, Asus Maximus Extreme VIII, Samsung M.2. 950 pro,
32gb G.SKILL TridentZ Series F4-3200C, In Win Open Frame black gold, Raijintek Triton 140mm AIO Water Cooling "later changed to Thermaltake RGB Fan 240 mm & EVGA SuperNova P2 750W Platinum. Finally I currently have a GTX 980 strix on loan from my son. He has my old 970. He wants his strix back :) My question is this GTX 1080 or Titan X Pascal? Now this were I find lots of diverging opinions. Some people say get a second card, example say 2x 1070, others say go with a GTX 1080 and then others still say if money if no issue go for the Titan X Pascal as it gives the most future proofing. So for me I'm not trying to break new bench marking ground. I want a superior system for both gaming 4k at 60FPS + all ultra settings and watching movies in 4k. My understanding is that SLI is not going to make gaming experience any better as there is hardly any support for it and is getting less. Furthermore the current generation of VR does not support multi GPU cards. I believe the GTX1080 ti is due to drop soon. So question may turn into 1080 vs Titan X. Last generation the Ti sucker punched the TX, could that be the case again. There is also the question of the TX's heat profile which I'm lead to believe could be problematic for ultra 4k 60fps+ and may require a water cooled sleeve of some kind. Alright then maybe the answer is a water cooled Titan X? Anyone care to offer some advise?

Solution
I would wait for the 1080ti. If you want 4k ultra settings the 1080 isn't going to get 60 fps in the latest games and certainly won't in the future. It is pretty safe to assume that the 1080ti will equal the Titan in gaming performance will less vram and a few hundred dollars cheaper. Another bonus will be that third party suppliers will most likely offer cards with much better coolers than the reference as well as factory overclocked cards.

Old thread I know but didn't want to start another and plus the 1080ti is now near release, so:

I heard all this "Titan X performance for less money" just before the 980ti was released then again before the 1080 was released but in reality it never really happens.

This time round I'm wondering whether to just go for the Titan X Pascal instead of the 1080ti. I mean, it'll hold its value so when the next Titan X comes out I'll be able to sell it and upgrade.

I game at 3440x1440 and I guess I'm just tired of being promised Titan performance and never really actually getting it. I mean realistically the 1080ti can't deliver the exact same performance as the Titan because that would make the Titan completely pointless.

And then get moaned at by someone else saying "why start a new thread, it's already covered" etc...
