Hello amazing people!

So my question is this:
With the imminent release of the GTX 1080/1070 which I am assuming 80% of you will buy Day 1 what monitor should one buy? Currently I am stuck trying to figure out if I should invest in a 1440p or a 4K monitor (both are Acer Predator lines).

The monitors in question are:
XB271HK IPS G-sync 4k 60hz (without OC)
Or XB271HU IPS G-sync 1440p 144hz (without OC)

Lets assume the GTX 1080 will run most games @ 60fps on the 4k display.
Reason why I am asking is because I am not sure if even with GTX 1080 a 4k monitor would be worth it @ 60HZ. Sure you get more pixels but is that even something you would notice on a 27" screen. Not to mention that the 4K screen is capped at 60hz (without OC) compared to the 1440p @ 144hz.

What are your guys' thoughts on this? Hope I am not the only one with this question.

Best regards,
AD

A single 1080 will definitely not run modern games at 4K@60fps.

The 1080 is described by Nvidia as being slightly faster than 980 SLI, and to even run games at 4K@60fps now you need at least 980ti SLI, and even that doesn't do it well enough for most people (45-60fps in most games at high settings).

To achieve a solid 4K@60fps, you'd need 1080 SLI (going off all the information from Nvidia right now).

As for 4K itself, the majority of tech sites, youtubers etc agree that there isn't much point to it at small screen sizes. To really take advantage of it, you need 32"+.

If youre planning on picking up a single 1080, go for 1440p 144hz.

Yea but what if you have a 4k Gsync monitor? Even if you don't maintain 60fps you'll still enjoy a smooth 4k experience. Especially since the Titan X can already run modern games in 4k at 45-60fps.

I would think the GTX 1080 will handle modern games at 4k/60fps if you turn off anti aliasing, which imo you don't need anyway at that resolution. I would go for a 32" 4k and nothing smaller than that. As for 1440p/144hz, yea 2k is a sweet spot but 4K is the future. Nothing else supports 2k except for games. There are no 2k movies, no 2k Netflix and no 2k blu rays nor will there ever be. Also, 1080p doesn't scale well with 2k. With a 4k monitor, you can enjoy ALL media in 4k, both games and movies, and all your current 1080 content, such as Netflix and Blu rays, will scale perfectly with a 4k display; not to mention 4k blu rays are now coming out and Netflix also has 4k movies as well. 2k is a bullshit niche resolution that will soon be forgotten once 4k becomes mainstream and affordable in another year or two. Only thing 2k has over 4k is the 144hz. But 144hz is only appreciated in shooters which make up only a small portion of gaming. 99% of games are third person action adventure, RTS etc, and 60fps is more than perfect for them. I think a gorgeous 4K picture at 32" with 138 ppi running at 60hz blows a 27" 2k/144hz display out of the water. If you think the new 1080 can't handle 4k, just remember that the Titan X is already doing 4k at 45-60fps (no AA). Get yourself a GTX 1080 and a 32" 4k monitor (with Gsync) and you will have absolutely no regrets.

I went for the Acer IPS 1440p 165hz (Oc'd) display. Main reason being that it's a (like many have said) sweet spot for a 27". And I would be able to use higher in-game settings.

Also I already have a 4k 60hz 55" Samsung TV that's hooked up to my PC and PS4, so for certain games I can always just switch displays.

I disagree about 144hz only being viable for FPS and twitchy games. After playing on my current 1080p 144hz screen I cannot go back to playing same games at 60hz. Once you play a game at 144hz weather it's an FPS, Diablo 3, Witcher or anything else it will be hard for you to go back to playing it on 60hz even if you are doing it on a 4k screen. It just won't feel as smooth and crisp.

I have to agree , can't believe the hype about the gtx 1080 if anyone done the math wasn't much of an increase between cards , if anyone believes it will go for a major disappointment

^ The problem is that they're misleading people. Techncially what they're doing is illegal. They've made sure they blurred the line for what performance actually means, as well as not clarifying what their numbers mean. This is a case of False Advertisment, and it's not accidental. Expect a lawsuit post benchmarks if what they blurred out doesn't seem to be true, regardless if realistic.

Reviews and benchmarks just hit.

Nvidia was pretty much spot on with their claims; a single 1080 is most definitely faster than a Titan X, and trades blows with 980 SLI in many games.

gall not true regardless what NVidia says I bought a gtx 1080 on a 32 " 4k monitor just for my curiosity the titan x is still faster in direct x mode but in vr mode the 1080 is better , but not many are into 3d , 3d was out for a very long time and wasn't too good , if it was a lot of companies will still be carrying them , the vr essentials are running $799- $1000

Every single independent review, video, article and benchmark site shows the 1080 to have around a 10-25% performance lead over the Titan X in every game they test, both in normal games and VR.
