I have a gaming rig that I was trying to upgrade the gpu on, but come to find out the new gpu needs an 8 pin power supply connection and my psu only has 6 pin.

Current build is Asus prime h270-plus motherboard, 16 GB ram, Intel core i7 7700 CPU, msi gtx 1060 3 gb gpu, 1tb hdd, 120gb sad, 480 GB SSD, running Windows 10. Current psu is an apex 500watt. Gpu I want to install is msi gtx 1660 ti 6gb.

Main question is should I upgrade my psu, or is there a reliable and safe way to hook it up with what I have? If I need to upgrade the power supply, what do you guys suggest?

If the PSU does not have the correct connections you cannot use a 1660. Adapters and things of the like aren't a good idea usually.

You would need to upgrade the PSU.

What is your budget for an upgraded GPU?
The 1660 was in the right pricepoint for me. Got it for around 300. I can afford to drop some more on a psu, but don't want to break the bank.
