GTX 260 vs 9800 GX2

My system: Cpu Core 2 duo 6850 3GHZ, Ram 4 GB OCZ dual channel 1066MHZ, mobo Asus P5KC, windows XP SP3

My question: I am between these 2 cards ---- XFX GTX 260 xxx edition running at 640 MHZ or EVGA 9800 GX2 SSC running at 675 MHZ ??

Both cards are fast and high end. I play all kind of games like (Crysis, Call of Duty 4, Company of heroes, Red Alert 3, Witcher, Assasins Creed etc..etc) and i wait Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 and Warhammer 2.

You believe that my system will run the games at least for 2 years with any of these 2 cards?

I play in a 22'' Samsung TFT at 1680 X 1050 resolution. Options: ultra high, 8X AA, etc...etc...

For what I´ve have experienced the GX2 is more than enough for every game except for Crysys/Warhead, some people in the forums (mostly Dagger) convinced me that the GX2 is a very good video card, I wanted to change it for the GTX 260 216 but not anymore.

Depends on resolution/AA levels. At 1980x1600 with 4x AA, the 260 wins more often then not. Turn down the res or AA though, and the GX2 starts to compete (and sometimes beat) the 280.

While the GX2 for the right price is a steal, at this point in time, with the price of the 260+ starting to fall, I can no longer favor the GX2 over the 260 when both are near the same price point. The 260, in terms of average performance and upgradeability (SLI) is simply a better investment. That being said, I also point out there is no point going from a GX2 to a 260 either.

If you are like me, and play at 1600x1200 or below, or don't notice AA that much at high resolutions (and leave it off), then the GX2 is the perfect card for you. But if you need 1980x1600 with 4x+ AA, get the 260 and SLI later if you need more oomph.

The GX2 performs better, thats no argument. Though u'll always have maximum a 9800 GTX if a game doesn't use SLI. (And I say maximum 9800 GTX because of an oc). + min frame rates are terrible. I had both cards soo trust me.

I'd grab the 260 GTX, but not the 216, unless ur unsecure with OCing.

Swifty word of advice, yours is very minimal, you have no reasons as to why he/she needs to go with the 260 GTX. All I'm seeing is that ur only argument is to say what dagger doesn't.

Isn't ur motherboard crossfire? If it is I'd look into the 4870 512 or 1 gig. It would be alittle more future proofing if you have Crossfire. If you have SLI then stay with the 260 GTX Either way both cards run on par pretty much, lately the 260 GTX has been out performing, but thats because of the driver releases. i'd wait and see wat 8.12 drivers bring to ATI before making a choice.

Well yes my mobo supports crossfire but i love nvidia. Also the GTX 260 xxx and 9800 GX2 are about 20% faster than 4870 1 GB.

No they are not, who ever told you that is a crock. Yes maybe 1 or 2 games that might happen, but that can happen to the 260 GTX vs the 4870 as well. I def don't see it happening with the 4870 1 gig though...

The 9800 GX2 is stronger than the 260 GTX its even sometimes stronger thant he 280 GTX (depending on AA and resoluion).

But please don't try to sell me dung and call it icecream. It is def not 20% faster than the 4870 1 gig.

I'd say the difference is minimal. PLus we haven't seen what the 8.12 drivers have to say.

If you go with the 260 GTX now, if you ever choose to add a new 1, you'll have to spendd another hundred bucks atleast to get aanother 260 GTX.

The GTX 260, the performance is comparable AND it uses much less power, giving you room in the budget to get a lower wattage power supply that is more efficient.

Assuming you are working on any kind of budget...

lol 20% faster than 4870 1gb? it might beat it in a game or two, but the 4870 1gb will own any nvidia card except for the 280, and we haven't even tried the new 8.12....

actually it wouldn't own Nica, as much as I thought thats the case as well. The 1 gig version is on par with the 260 GTX Sp 216. The 216 is actually beating it a little bit because of the drivers, but the new drivers should do something although i heard minimal gains from ppl that installed them, and no Quadfire support.

Either way 1-3 fps is nothin.

i would prefer the 260 myself but that is me. i think as well as the 9800 gx2 benches, it was never a mature product and is pretty well neglected by the manufacturer. if you can hold off a but longer, you will start to see new numbers emerge with the new catylist drivers as well as the release of the die shrink 200 series.

got to agree with liquid there. no need in cherry picking reviews to prove a point. the cards are virtually the same in performance. it is going to come down to preference.

Well, right now my decision has been made up between the GTX 260 Core 216 over the 9800 GX2.

The 9800 GX2 is a very fast card, I had one a few weeks ago and it was insanely fast, the fact that I played Crysis at a 1440x900/Very High Settings/16xQ AA, and my benchmark was about 43 FPS average, the reason why I did not like th card is becuase I only had it for 6 months and due to the ammount of heat it fried my motherboard and wires around it with a small fire (Which could have been prevented if I were to have allowed better ventilation to my PC )

Now, I had ust got my new GTX 260, and placed it in a temporary motherboard, and the GTX 260 is already outperforming the 9800 GX2 with 56 FPS on the same settings with Crysis, and not only that, the GTX 260 Core 216 is also a lot more energy efficiant, and it does not permit near as much heat off of it, plus the one fan on the GTX 260 proves to be more efficiant than the two fans on my 9800 GX2.

9800GX2 = basically 2 9800GTs OCed and in SLi

It is equal to or slightly better than the GTX280.

The GTX260 is weaker, but more power efficient and you can SLi another.


Get the GX2 if it's price is less than 50% more expensive than the GTX260.
