GTX 460 V2 - solid card for the price?

Hey guys,

I recently purchased MSI's version of the 460 V2 card (not to be confused with 460 SE). Should be arriving tomorrow, so I can't test it just yet. Here's the link to the card on Newegg:

Downsides:

- 192-bit memory interface instead of 256-bit
- can only SLI with 192-bit GF114 cards, but then again I don't much care for SLI, personally

Upsides:

- Price - I unfortunately just missed the deal where it was at $89, but $109 post-rebate also seems like a good deal
- Great clocks at stock - 810mhz core and 4008mhz memory seems to put it about on par with 560 numbers, and quite beyond your typical 460
- 1 GB where many original 460s are at 768
- GF114 architecture potentially makes it a much better overclocker than the original 460

I was wondering what the general opinion is on this card, as far as price😛erformance ratio. Do the clocks and potentially great overclocking potential w/ GF114 make up for the 192-bit bus?

Also, has anyone actually tried overclocking this type of card? This particular MSI version carries impressive clocks at stock and I'm wondering how much further it can be OC'd beyond that. It's very difficult to find reviews and general impressions on the 460 V2 in general, much less this exact card, so any opinions are appreciated. I'm upgrading from a 8800GTX (I know, I know, it's been a long time coming) so it will be a significant upgrade regardless.

Specs:

2500k @ 4.5ghz
8gb RAM
1920x1200 monitor (I'm slightly concerned I won't be able to run some of the heavier-duty games at that resolution)

6850 would have been the smart choice since you stated "don't much care for SLI, personally" but that GTX 460 would have been a good deal @ around $100 but not when you can get a far better Radeon HD 6850 for $130 Next time I suggest you come to TH first before you buy that way next time you will get the best deal possible.

More performance and the 256bit 1gb GTX 460 is even losing out to the 6850 and the 192bit 460 is even slower than the 256bit one. Do you have an SLI ready mobo if so then you will be doing well if you can pick up another GTX 460 down the road cause you will be wanting more power for your games at 1080P

I'm planning on overclocking this thing past its stock 810mhz. This card isn't just a 460 with 196-bit bus - it has a GF114 chip like the GTX 560 and GTX 560 Ti. Seems like it should be able to go above 900mhz.

Dunno, doesn't seem like the difference is big enough to really matter, plus Nvidia tends to have better game support. I'll take this one for a spin when it comes in tomorrow, see how it handles the games I have. Can be easily RMA'd if it doesn't work out.

An OC will net 3 to 7fps more in games more or less so don't expect a miracle but you will want a second one for SLI at some point. Nvidia does not have more support for games that is not a fact it is a fan boy sentiment but like I say ether way you go you will be wanting SLI with the 460s and CF with 6850s so it's not a big loss that the GTX 460 is not the best deal @ around the $140 price point. You will be seeing around 20fps in Crysis 2 with a single GTX 460

I don't need to max out Crysis 2 @ Ultra or something of the like. That kills almost everything but multi-GPU configs, and it's very rare that games demand that sort of power given how many in recent years are based on low-end Xbox 360 technology.

I can easily wait for single cards based off the 680 when I have the budget for it, or even the 680 itself. Not really that urgent given that like 3 current games would need it. My mobo isn't SLI-ready but I'm only interested in single-GPU setups anyway.

GTX 460 1 GB is on par with Radeon HD 6850. The difference is made by the default GPU clocks. Well 6850 just gets better performance in the games like Metro 2033 and Crysis 1&2 you know the heavy hitters but they will be close in BF3 but the 6850 is the better card for sure. As you can see the GTX 460 1GB needs to be OCed to compete with the stock Radeon HD 6850 -

Based upon the limited availability and higher price of the good versions of the GTX 460/560 and the superiority of the 6850 I am inclined to make a full recommendation to the OP for the cheaper and faster Radeon HD 6850 over the slightly slower and pricier Nvidia GeForce GTX 460

I'm gonna hang on to this card. I quite like it. I've been messing around with it today.

For anyone who's wondering, this card overclocks like a beast, as expected. I've gotten it stable through Kombustor and 3D Mark 11 @ clocks of 900/1800/2100 with a VDDC of 1.012v. It doesn't go beyond a temperature of 59 degrees with stock fans on auto (and the fans didn't need to go beyond just 50% speed during the burn-in test, so it's also super quiet).

I haven't even tried to go higher than that yet, and it's very likely I can, especially since that's a fairly low voltage. But I'm cool with these numbers and that sweet low temp @ very high GPU loads.

This card is a massive value @ roughly $100. Should be enough to tide anyone over till prices start really dropping on the top-end cards.

MSI GTX460 V2. Overclocked to 975 core, 1.087 volts, 2200 mem. shaders and core locked together for OC.
Temperature at end of Physx burn in was 71 deg, successfully completed to 100%.

Skyrim not all maxed out (no antiisotropic filtering, 2x aa sampling, settings other than radial blur set to max, view distances at a minimum of 10)... no more than 50 deg and constant 60fps.

Processor is AMD 965 BE. Now next step is to overclock the processor to at least 3.8Ghz.

Actually buddy, i have the GTX 460 v2 oc and as for crisis 2 i get x2 that at some points 60FPS.
