GTX 470 problem...

Ugh. Okay, so I just got a GTX 470 recently, waited a bit until I got the rest of the parts to upgrade comp.

Anyways.. I uninstalled nvidia stuff (drivers, etc) that were installed from my 9800GX2. Installed drivers for GTX470, and it seemed to work. However, if you turn the computer off then back on, it will NOT boot back up.

My motherboard has LED's that light up around certain areas, for example the VGA LED stays a constant red, meaning there is a problem.

But if I switch back to my 9800GX2, tada, no problem at all.

I uninstalled drivers again, took out the gx2, put in the 470, installed drivers, restarted and it was working... then shut the comp down, turned it back on, and then the red light AGAIN. It will NOT start up.

I put my 9800gx2 and bam, it starts up fine.

Wtf?

Comp specs are 4gb ddr3-1600
Vista Ultimate 64 bit
Phenom II 955
Mobo is M4A89TD Pro/USB3

Have you tried installing older drivers too ?

Power??? what is your PSU size? It seems your card isn't getting enough power!

the 9800 GX2 has a power consumption requirement of around a 500W PSU, but the GTX 470 requires a 700W

remember, lights, LED's and any other extra components, use power, the more extra's you have, the more power you need--- hence, a bigger power supply!!

Haven't tried older drivers, but I don't necessarily want to do that either.

PSU has come to mind, hmm.. I'm running a Zumax X4 maybe 850 watter.

Seems to run fine with the 9800gx2. I actually unplugged an led lit fan when the 470 was in incase the power was an issue. I also ordered a new power supply just a bit ago, 83A on single 12v, so that might be pleeenntty. haha.

Does it sound like a logical problem? the PSU? What would point to it being PSU?

Here's a pic rated for the 850 watter, is it crap for a 470? This might help determine more so if it's the PSU at fault.

a 470 isn't much higher then a 9800 X2, i believe the 470 is in around 220 if i'm right, i'm not as fimilar with the 9800X2 but i'm sure it's at least pretty close to 200 watts , so psu wouldn't be a problem epically with 850 watts

does your computer post then not boot, or does it not even post?

With the 470, the monitor doesn't even become active, it stays idle.

But take out the 470 and pop in the gx2 and voila, it posts/boots/monitor goes active, etc.

thats 58% more power usage and consumption...ON THE CARD ALONE!!!

plus a few more LED, Sensors, etc!!


@ jouho: just remember the two different technologies are about two and a half years apart!! even before the GTX200 series came out! that means with all the other capabilities that the GTX 400 series, and the unbelievable abilities of the 400 series, power needs to be optimized!!

Two 6-pin auxiliary power connectors are required on the GeForce GTX 470. are you sure they are plugged and connected properly? this is definitely a hardware problem, because once you put your older card in, the pc starts right up!!

It can't be the driver's because the 9800GX 2 and the GTX 470 use the same driver's

alright.....let's say that its not the power supply, are your driver's up to date before you unplug your old card and plug in the new one??

but I'm keeping to my original option and idea!!

@OP Can you try your GTX470 in another PC to see if your GTX470 is faulty or not?

"GeForce GTX 470

System in IDLE = 205 Watts
System with GPU in FULL Stress = 419 Watts
Difference (GPU load) = 214Watt (TDP = 215W)"

[H] Is showing the same numbers, roughly 420-430W with GPU under load + the rest of the system.

The GPU on its own uses 214W under load, not 310W...

and Tom's have the 9800GX2 at about 217w for the card alone not 197w.

I'm not that familiar with the 890 chipset boards but I would start by looking at the RAM and CPU voltages first and go from there.

Mobo seems to be a dud. Requested RMA.

UPGRADE your PSU ... you will see your dreams come true ..even if you hardly go in to ur windows & start gaming you wont enjoy of it ....IF your PSU is low ..... GO FOR Corsair 650 TX ...for future you can SLi or crossfire with it ...without any problem .

Read the thread before making inane posts, the OP's previous card works and that uses about the same amount of power as the new card, and not only is a new PSU already on order but the mobo is now being RMA'd.
