GTX 550 ti lower framerates than GTX 280

So, my friend recently bought a GTX 550 TI. In my old gaming rig, i have a GTX 280. For some reason, on all games we tested (World of tanks, War thunder, Minecraft, GTA 4), I got better frame rates. I want to know why. Is the GTX 550TI slower than the 3 generations older GTX 280?
Both PCs have 6gb ram, the GTX 550 ti was powered by an I3, and the 280 was with a core 2 quad.

Depending on the game, the Core 2 Quad may give a pretty big boost to the performance. Especially in open world games like GTA 4. It could also be that you're running the games at a lower resolution and/or graphics settings. From looking up some comparisons, it seems like the 280 actually has some advantages over the 550ti so it's not surprising.

Im pretty sure World of tanks is single threaded, im not sure of the other games. All games were at 1080p on high settings (if i remember correctly). The GTX 550 ti is slower than the 280 in some areas? D:

The answer is simple GTX 280 is a top-end card in it's class while GTX 550 ti is medium grade.

The only major difference is power usage and DX compatibility other then that GTX 280 was a very powerful card since it was born.
Number of generations doesn't matter but pure raw power does. Even today HD 7970 or GTX 680 will wipe the floor with current mid graders like R9 370 or GTX 950.

Wow, i didn't realize that the 280 was actually faster than the 550 ti. Nvidia did a good job on the 280.

Bigger numbers don't always mean better. 🙂

More like new generation does not always mean it is better. Gpu maker release top to bottom new card when they come up with new generation. But it doesn't mean the slowest in the new generation are faster than previous gen fastest. Back then when gpu maker come up with new flagship the previous gen top performance are more like the mid range in new generation. In general 550Ti is more like GTX260 in term raw performance. But 550Ti use less power than 260 because of new process node. Plus 550Ti is dx11 capable gpu. For dx11 exclusives game 200 series will not be able to run them.

Exclusive yes, but many still handle both DX 10 and DX 11, example is GTA 5
