GTX 560 Ti upgrade questions

Hello, I am looking at upgrading from my current card, a gtx 260 (OC and 1.8gb memory) and I am fairly certain that I have settled on the 560 ti. I have an alienware aurora with a i7 920 and what I am fairly certain is a 500W psu. My questions are recommendations on brands of the card (I am thinking EVGA DS model) as well as double checking my psu's compatibility. Thanks guys.

EVGA, Sapphire, Asus, MSI, XFX, all good brands. 500W is ok. Been looking for the psu, Alienware ( the new ones ) starts from 525W on.

and yea a 500W PSU is sufficient for the system. if you are using more PCI cards, more fans, overclocking your CPU a 600W PSU might be your best option.

Check your PSU manufacturer. Considering a 560ti recommends at least a 550W, if its a quality brand you should be all set. If not, upgrade that as well.

you know the Radeon 6990 is a tad more energy efficient, perhaps you won't need to upgrade PSU if you go for that 😛

I will assume it is quality, since it came from alienware, although they are usually a little pricey, I have not had any major problems. Thanks for your advice and would I still be ok if I left the 260 in there or would that be pushing the envelope?

Dell psu's are ok.
I would not leave the 260 in tho.

Dang, I was hoping to use it for a bit of gpu programming. Also my other question is how drastic is the difference between the 560 ti oc and the 570? And for the 560 ti is the Gigabyte really that much better than the EVGA model?

Almost all 560Ti boards are built from the reference architecture and with the exception of clock speed and cooling solution, are nearly identical. The 570 is faster, but the 560ti is a better performance to $$$ ratio.

Thanks guys, I ordered the EVGA 560ti superclock DS. It should be here today actually. For now I will keep out the second card and maybe up the PSU sometime down the road.

Hey there I was researching doing the same exact thing to my aurora. It came with a 545 watt power supply when i ordered it two years ago with an i7 920 and a GTX 260. Can you please tell me how this goes for you? Also, can you tell me if your card is bigger in thickness compared to the 260, I have a soundblaster in there and theres no room for anything bigger GPU wise.

It went well, I decided just to take out the old card until I up the power supply. Also the card is almost exactly the same height as the 260

Thankyou, I hope the evga card is on the smaller side in comparison to alienware 260, because there is maybe a centimeter inbetween the sound and graphics card at the moment.
