GTX 580 3Gb and 1.5Gb in SLi?

Hey guys,

I'm in the process of finishing off my gaming PC and have bought myself a Gainward GTX 580 Phantom 3Gb and was just wondering if I could use the 1.5Gb model of the same card in SLi. As far as I know it's got the same clock speeds and all so I think it will work but would very much like a second opinion before committing to buying another card.

The system so far is as follows:

Motherbaord: Asus P8Z68-V PRO (0606 UEFI update)
CPU: Intel i5 2500K clocked at 4.3Ghz and has a Corsair H100 for cooling
RAM: 8Gb Corsair Vengeance @ 1600Mhz 8-8-8-24
Graphics Card: Gainward GTX 580 Phantom (3Gb)
SSDs: 2 64Gb Crucial M4s (0009 update) in RAID 0 and 2 64Gb Crucial C300s as secondary storage
Power Supply OCZ ZX 1250watt modular power supply
All wrapped up in a Thermaltake Level 10 GT which supports the H100 without having to mod anything which is sweet!

Anyway...

If anyone knows if I can use the 1.5Gb model with the 3Gb model that I already have, I would really love to know.

Apparently it will work but the 3Gb card will only be able to use 1.5Gb 🙁

you can use the 1.5GB model but then you lose the extra 1.5GB on the phantom
it means you have 3GB of unusable vram instead of just 1.5

1.5GB vram per card unused....bummer

^^ Yep, from what I hear you have to registry tweak it but you can do it because the cores are the same.

Just get another 3GB card. No point in getting a 1.5GB one if you currently have a 3GB one, and yes you would have to use a registry tweak because it's not suppose to work by default.
