hi i just bought a gtx 580 and it is second hand, came with no discs or anything and its giving me a black screen and i dont know why, previously had a 260,what do i have to do to get it working, Also im using 2 6 pin pci-e plugs instead of a 6 and an 8, im also very new to pc's!
specs:
i7 920
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
8gb ram

Solution
usually a card runs fine without being under load even though some pins (2) aren't connected but obviously that's not the case for every single graphics card, and since you did mention that the fans were running I'd say trying a 6 and 8 pin might solve your problem.
Since it's a second hand there's a chance that the card was already dead when you received it but another thing you can do is to check your bios settings/info to see if your mother board does recognize a card being installed in the PCIX slot

So ummm I plugged it in with the 6 to 8 pin adaptor and it's getting hot and the fan still works so it's definitely working, when I switched it on I heard the update/new device sound but I still can't get a screen, I mean it's working and the motherboard is compatible etc. I just don't know why there's no screen!
