Question GTX 580 stuck at PCIE 1.1 x16 on B660M ?

Hello,

I recently managed to get ahold of a ASUS TUF B660M GAMING Wifi D4 and an i3-12100 for an upgrade to my secondary pc, however i have since noticed that my PCIE 2.0 cards will never run at PCIE 2.0 in the system, only at PCIE 1.1 x16 (according to GPU-Z.)
I’ve tried multiple driver versions, including a motherboard bios update (that was needed) and it still remains the same.

I have two identical models of EVGA GTX 580 (one’s a 1.5GB and one is a 3GB) and both cards report only PCIE 1.1 x16 even under full load.

My previous test pc was an i5-7400 with a H110M-K and that ran the cards at PCIE 2.0 x16 just fine.

I’ve also tested PCIE 3.0 cards in the system and they run correctly.

Go into bios and change the PCIE type to 2.0 or 3.0 manually.

bottom slot is only x4 on that mobo and there is no mention about it supporting SLI. (sli is dead)

I’m not using SLI on this system, ik the 2x 580 is a bit misleading but i meant by the fact i’ve tried 2 different 580’s in the top slot.

I manually set the top slot to pcie gen 2.0 and the card just stayed at 1.1x16 no matter what load I put it under.

How are you coming to the conclusion that the GPU is only runing PCIe 1.1 mode? Are you looking at GPU-Z while your game is minimized? That can cause the game to lose window focus and drop the GPU down to 1.1 mode when it would otherwise be running 2.0 mode. Dropping to 1.1 mode is a power saving feature.

I’m running both Aida 64 and GPU-Z in foreground with the game running in windowed mode behind - game is still running at full load. Even performing the GPU-Z render doesn’t change it in App from PCIE 1.1 X16 @ PCIE 1.1 X16 - however, Aida 64 shows PCIE 2.0x16 @ PCIE1.1 x16 at full load.

I’ve also tried running multiple programs at once and it just doesn’t change.

When both GTX580’s ran on my older i5-7400 system, they ran and changed PCIE modes fine.

Misleading, I run an RX-570 that shows 1.1 in GPU-Z but MB is 2.0 capable (not switchable).
Run FurMark Rog and it will show you PCI-E 2.0. When idle it goes back to 1.1.
Speccy fails to show Crossfire, don't take all programs as infallible.

I know how it works. I’m monitoring the PCIE State in multiple programs and i have about 20 different GPU’s I vary through testing, it’s just the PCIE 2.0 cards that are having issues.

Asked a friend of mine to do the same on his ASUS H610M and he got the same result, so i’ve contacted ASUS as I do believe it is a bios issue on their 600 series boards. But we shall see

I contacted ASUS themselves. This is what they said:


"Thank you for contacting the ASUS UK Support Team.

Kindly be advised these products aren't designed with use of 10+ year old cards in mind hence we do not validate such cards on newer platforms, it might be resolved with future BIOS updates but this is not guaranteed.

Most of these older generation cards do not have UEFI support as well hence different issues can be seen with these products."
