so i currently have a 660 and will be getting a 960 relatively soon and am wondering what to do with my 660 and a friend (we both know the bare essentials about computers but nothing about Cross firing) suggested that i crossfire them together and i have no idea how that works or if they are compatible and if it would be in my interest to do so

Solution
Well you should know the difference between crossfire and SLI 1st, crossfire is what AMD cards use in dual, triple, quad card setups SLi is the nvidia equivalent, and no, you cannot sli a 660 and a 960, in order to sli a 960 with another card, that card would have to be another 960.

I suggest you put the 660 in the same computer and use it for PhysX based games as a dedicated PhysX card. You CANNOT crossfire a 960 and a 660 (It would be called SLI for Nvidia based cards) but you can use the 660 as the PhysX card. If you do put both cards in your PC just Put them in two different PCIE slots but don't put an SLI connector on them. Then go into Nvidia control Panel and under 3D settings you will see configure sound and PhysX. In the PhysX box choose your 660! HAVE FUN!

Nada for games? If the game uses PhysX it will have HUGE benefits. Tomb Raider, Borderlands Metro Last Light ALOT of games use physX. If you are even UPGRADING from a 660 to a 960 you should use it for PhysX unless you are planning on building a weaker PC for the Living room or something.

Have you seen any benchmarks with and without a separate card doing physx? I just haven't heard of many people doing it for games, I thought it was more people running engineering applications or high end 3d rendering that would make use of that.

I had a 660ti 3gb SC and I just bought a 970 Asus strix. I can actually use PhysX in these games, which I have at LEAST 7 games that use it. Most games drop FPS A LOT when you try to use PhysX and you don't have a dedicated card. Why are you so shy of putting it in? It won't TAKE anything away, if you have a nice PSU anyways.
