I'm planning to buy a graphics card that can easily play Skyrim and GTA4 with quite a few graphically intensive mods(8k textures&ENBs) on a 1650x1050 monitor. Should I buy a GTX 660 straight away or save up a few more dollars and buy something like a R9 280x?
Here are my specs:
Asus H81M-E
Intel Core i5-4440
2x4GB GeiL 1333 RAM
XFX 650w 80+gold PSU
Seagate Barracuda 500GB
Silverstone Redline RL04

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

I agree, stay Nvidia. Less problems, better performance, and the new drivers won't sideline your computer for two weeks. The 760 is the best card for the money right now, arguably. MSI would be my choice. If you can afford a 770, buy one, they're awesome. No need to go much bigger after the 770, the price to performance margin separates dramatically. Unless you have money to burn that is...

Give it a week or two and you'll see a sale, always happens.

Have fun.
go for something that is better than 660 like 760 or 770. they are a lot more faster and can run heavy games like crysis3 with more ease than 660. and of course r9 280x is a great card too. but personally i don't have much experience with AMD though and also, lately price for amd is high too. so, i think better option for now would be NVidia at same price range.

In Australia, the GTX 770 costs almost $100 more than a 280x so thats out of my budget 🙁. If I decided to go with the GTX 760, would it's 2GB vram perform as well as the 3GB on the 280x when ultra high res textures are installed?

as far as i know, for your screen resolution the 2gb should be fine even on ultra with any card 770 or r9 280x but if you are going for higher resolution(above 1080p) then 2gb may be an eye sore in any card.

if ur budget is for 280x then go for it
watch for discounts though 😉
