GTX 660 TI drivers won't install

So I just upgraded from a GTX 460 to the 660 TI 2 gb SC from EVGA on my Windows 8 Pro system.
Everything seems to work, currently running at 1080p and such, but I can't update the drivers. All I've done so far is insert the driver disc included in the box with, I think, version 305 of the Nvidia drivers, which I knew were not the newest. BTW I could only install the drivers on the disc while running it in compatibility mode with Windows 7...
Well, after making that work I went directly to Geforce.com and got the most recent 310,7 drivers and I've tried simply running the .exe, running it compatible with Win 7 and also with Admin rights and nothing has worked. It simply tells me to restart the Pc and try again, which doesn't help one bit.

What I've tried looking at since then is:
- Windows update, which found update files and installed those to no change
- Uninstalling the drivers altogether from the Control Panel, wasn't allowed either, got the 'Reinstall' prompt again
- Device Manager and uninstalling the driver, restarting, then the driver simply reappeared as if nothing had happened... [Error code 28 BTW]
- Since the Windows Update it doesn't find any new update files
- Updating Windows Experience Index lowered my earlier score from 7,9 to 4,1 >_> On a better card...

Can anyone figure out what I can do about this?

Other specs:
- Asus P8Z68-V LX motherboard
- Intel Core i5 2500k CPU
- 1 Tb. 5400 RPM HDD
- 8 gb. RAM
- This supposedly amazing EVGA GTX 660 TI 2 gb. SC GPU...

have you tried running sfc /scannow to see if you have any errors?

open command prompt as administrator

type sfc /scannow and press enter

theres a space between sfc and /scannow
Try this it may sound stupid but it has worked for me and many others before.Turn off windows upate
Uninstall the drivers.
Download driver fusion http://treexy.com/
Reboot system in safe mode and run driver fusion.
Reboot again.
Re-downloaded drivers http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
Turn on windows updates

Do you still have the 460 in the pc?
so that error is

Ok, I've run the scan and it reported that some files are corrupt, told me to check the CBS.log file - I just took ownership of it since access was denied and now I'm looking at a very long list og Windows-related things, can't really tell what to do with it though... I also installed DriverFusion, so I'll be giving that a try in safe mode now

And no, the 460 has been removed, but I did not manually uninstall its drivers before I did so, so I would suppose that as a factor in this problem :/

Ok, I've done the entire thing with safe mode and running Driver Fusion; I used it to delete the Nvidia drivers. Everything went away but for 2 files that could not be deleted. Since then I booted back in normal mode and the screen ran on a Windows backup driver. Then I tried running installers still failing.
I've tried deleting the Nvidia folders in my Program files (both 32- and 64- bit folders). Rebooting as prompted, then I still couldn't uninstall the drivers via the Control Panel, just got an error saying the files couldn't be found (surprise). Then via Device Manager I had the card installed again and the screen returned to 1080p as before.

My Experience Index score went from the 4,1 to 7,9 after a new scan, so it would seem that the card runs as it should now, but the installers still won't run :S The version number of the display driver running is (weirdly enough) 306,97. Now what was on the disc was version 304,xx and the most recent version is 310,9 which I have redownloaded and it won't run exactly as before, also Device Manager says this is the most recent driver - Windows Update doesn't find anything to install anywhere...

I'm gonna try out some games and see how it runs, but even if games run well, how am I gonna update in the future? :S

Have you tried deleting the .dll files from the system32 folder?

I can't say that I have, no, but I tried out games like Crysis 2 and Skyrim and both ran according to my expectations for the card :S So it would seem that the driver is working as it should, just weird if I still can't update - Do you think deleting the .dll's would help?

Ok, it was the .dll's - I ran Ccleaner's Registry Scan and it found around 40 issues with Nvidia .dll's, so I fixed them and installed the updated drivers without further ado
