[SOLVED] GTX 670 Core and Memory Speeds are stuck?

Hey Yall,

The core and memory speed on my 670 seem to be stuck or running at idle speed only

System:
2012 Alienware R2
Intel I7-4770
GTX 670
16g Ram
330Psu
No overclock

What I done so far
- Used DDU to clean and reinstall the latest and older drivers for the card
-Ensure in Nivida control panel settings were set to max performance
-Pulled and reseated the graphics card and ram
-Insure all cable are connected

You have a 330w power supply with a graphics card that needs a MINIMUM of a 500w unit? That's your first problem. You need a different power supply FOR SURE. And that is probably a problem since that unit likely uses a proprietary form factor for the power supply. If it takes a standard ATX power supply then upgrading that PSU should be your first order of business. If it does not, then you're going to want to look around to see if Dell offers a higher capacity unit that will fit your machine.

Secondly, I'd try resetting your bios and in fact, it would be a good idea to check to see if there is a NEWER BIOS available for your motherboard than what is currently installed, and if there is, update, and THEN do a hard reset of the CMOS as follows. And if none of that works, then you probably have a card that has finally decided to take a dirt nap which wouldn't be particularly surprising since that card is about 7 years old.



BIOS Hard Reset procedure

Power off the unit, switch the PSU off and unplug the PSU cord from either the wall or the power supply.

Remove the motherboard CMOS battery for five minutes. In some cases it may be necessary to remove the graphics card to access the CMOS battery.

During that five minutes, press the power button on the case for 30 seconds. After the five minutes is up, reinstall the CMOS battery making sure to insert it with the correct side up just as it came out.

If you had to remove the graphics card you can now reinstall it, but remember to reconnect your power cables if there were any attached to it as well as your display cable.

Now, plug the power supply cable back in, switch the PSU back on and power up the system. It should display the POST screen and the options to enter CMOS/BIOS setup. Enter the bios setup program and reconfigure the boot settings for either the Windows boot manager or for legacy systems, the drive your OS is installed on if necessary.

Save settings and exit. If the system will POST and boot then you can move forward from there including going back into the bios and configuring any other custom settings you may need to configure such as Memory XMP profile settings, custom fan profile settings or other specific settings you may have previously had configured that were wiped out by resetting the CMOS.

In some cases it may be necessary when you go into the BIOS after a reset, to load the Optimal default or Default values and then save settings, to actually get the hardware tables to reset in the boot manager.

The 330 psu is what came with the system when I got it from alieanware and work fine until this issue

After doing what you said the system did not display the post screen. Maybe I did it wrong? Anyways after check the sytem I notice theirs a code 43 error popping up now with the graphics card in device manger. Updated the driver and no luck still there.

If you did EVERYTHING that Darkbreeze said, then you should not have any issue unless the GPU is faulty. What did you do exactly? Did you change the PSU? Did you upgrade BIOS? Did you do a hard reset?

Has it always been that way? What Windows power profile are you running? Assuming you aren't running high performance, another thought is that the video card has a special BIOS from Alienware that keeps it always at full speed for "reasons."

Chances are good that your OEM PSU has died. I'd look at replacing it with a new one, which will also likely die because it is not capable of supporting that graphics card's demands properly.
