GTX 690 low performance in BF3

Hey all.

Recently upgraded to a GTX 690 and I'm getting less than stellar performance in bf3. hopefully someone can help me brainstorm a solution.

I average around 80 fps with dips as low as 40. Most benchmarks have a 690 averaging about 122-125 at 1080p.

I've done all the usual. wiped drivers with driver sweeper and re installed, etc.

all others games get a solid 120fps but most games wouldn't demand enough of this card for me to see any issues. So i'm not sure the issue is just with BF3.

Currently have a 3570k at 4.5 GHZ, 8gb ram, 750w corsair psu. no bottlenecks here.

getting on my nerves a little as I'm so used to 120fps, that dropping to 60 seems incredibly choppy.

thoughts?

Well the thing you need to take into consideration is that most benchmarks do not use the normal CPU that you use they use the extreme processors of the 2011 line of processors. Also, there are a ton of variables there is ram and the speed that some people use going beyond the normal 1600 to squeeze a little more out. I feel you are probably getting around where you should you are probably getting very non choppy gaming with your 690.

Sorry, but there's no way that a 3570k at 4.5 Ghz is causing a difference of 30fps. and most benchmarks I've seen have actually been using either ivy or sandy processors. The point is, a 690 should be running better than it currently is, and i need to find out why.

Exactly. I'm currently running an asrock z77-e ITX. bitfenix prodigy build. Only one PCIe slot but its 3.0 so should be no issue. I am planning to upsize again shortly so hopefully the change of motherboard might help my issue...

To be more exact, I wanted to know how does your GTX690 performs in other games? Does it show similar results as shown in other reviews? If your poor performance from the 690 is only on BF3, it could be either a driver issue, maybe a patch in the game or overheat as well (how are temps btw?). I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to be CPU bottlenecked or anything because a 3570K at 4.8GHz is more than capable of running the card

Have you checked to make sure that both GPU's are functioning? I have heard of some cases where the second GPU in a multi-GPU card (such as the 690) aren't functioning. A quick look at the figures shows it's reporting roughly the same as a single 680.

Those are about the frames I get with nearly the same setup (actually insanely close - i5-3570k at 4.6GHz, 8GB RAM, ect... in a bitfenix prodigy.) but a GTX 670. (I'm with you though, when you play most games maxxed out at 120 fps, the ones you can't are really jarring.)

That makes it sound somewhat like a CPU bottleneck, like what was mentioned. It would be at least worth turning down the graphics settings to see if it makes a difference - it takes seconds and is a guaranteed way to tell if it's the CPU.

(By the way, it's the people being rude and unnecessarily aggressive that are ruining this forum - if you don't like it, then don't insist other people leave; simply leave yourself.)

I'm just about to go to bed, so will post back with some other benches tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure both GPUs are functioning but will run a more compelte test also tommorrow.

And sorry for overreacting, i'm just very irritable at present and predicted posting here would result in a deluge of unhelpful posts as is usually the case.

thanks all for the assistance, will update tomorrow.

I agree but keep in mind most of the benchmarks are done in single player. The fps drops are weird... do you use Afterburners osd? Can also use HWinfo64 to display cpu info as well in AB's osd.

Are you running your benchmarks in single-player, or multi-player? I think most of the big review sites have consistently shown that multi-player has far more volatility than in single-player, so I think most of their published benchmarks are from single-player mode, simply for consistency. Might be worth a look.

And as one of the other posters said, it would be helpful to know your results across multiple games, and see if they are also below expectations. That would help narrow the solution to game-specific vs. system-specific.

Wow everyone around here preaches how the i5 3570k is more than enough for gaming. and then you get threads like these.... so what is it, for the less technologically knowledgeable of us around here? make up your minds.

Yes, the 3570K is plenty, at least in my personal test base of... 1. Mild overclock keeps BF3 under 100% CPU utilization. I get up around 90 fps with dips to the 70s with adaptive vsync off and minor tweaks (FXAA to high, MSAA off - looks the same to me). Rock solid 60fps with adaptive vsync on.

Glad, at this point, I didn't spend more on the 3770K. By the time it becomes an issue it'll be time for a CPU/mobo/RAM replacement anyway.

But, if money is no object and "I have the zomz fastest" desire is in effect, then get a socket 2011 3930K setup. Not a big deal :)
