pretty sure this is a no brainer but, I have a choice to choose between a 690 for $250 or a 970 for $350 which one should I get.

Solution
690 is limited to 2gb of usable vram, i'd avoid it. go with the 970. if you plan to ever play at greater res than 1080p, the 970 with 4gb vram is a no brainier. for 1080p or less, you can take your chances on the 690 and hope future games wont use more than 2gb vram at 1080p (a couple already do on ultra settings). It wont cause a game not to run, but once you fill up vram you get stuttering and fluctuating fps.

Let me also add that, the 900series will be supporting dx12... all new eye candy.

Also what iam2thecrowe said, you are limited too 2gb of vram, new games... especially when dx12 comes out, will use a lot more than 2gb on ultra settings..

Wait wait wait. GTX 690 for $250? Wow. What a deal. (Are you sure it's not a GTX 680 or something? :p)

Regardless, I would go with the 970 as well. Although the GTX 690 is a more powerful card, dual GPU cards have their problems. Getting one powerful standalone card usually is the most pleasant approach.

More importantly, what resolution do you play at?
