GTX 750 Ti vs GTX 780

Here are two cards I am looking at... GTX 750 ti and GTX 780

My question is.. I know for me to run games like watchdogs, or thief and GTA at the best settings, the GTX 780 would be the way to go... But my real question is, for a $300 difference, how far off would I be from performance when using the GTX 750 Ti instead of the GTX 780?

Would I just be better off spending the extra $300?

Thanks

Watch Dogs at 1080p.. The 750 Ti is going to be right around the 265/GTX 650 Ti Boost level. It might not be worth the extra $300, but you won't be able to really enjoy the game on a GTX 750 Ti, with these settings anyway.

Some other points of contention, besides the obvious performance/price:
1) power supply requirements are much lower for the 750 ti, as for most boards don't require an additional power source
2) the 750ti has no SLI connectors, so scaling up is out of the question
Have you ever considered the gtx 760 or 770?

I was originally wanting the 780.. But the price is a little steep so I was seeing where I could save some $$$. How much of a performance difference would there be from the 780 and 770? I have a Corsair TX650 btw.

A better question is why you would need the 780. If you're using a single 1080p display, the GTX 770 will generally get you to 60 FPS and near-max settings in many or most games. You would want something faster if a.) you are running at 1440p or higher or b.) you are using a monitor with 120 Hz or 144 Hz refresh rate (allowing you to take advantage of framerates above 60 FPS).

If your goal is gaming at 60 FPS and 1080p, the GTX 770 or Radeon R9 280X is all you'd really need.

But if I am using a 21:9 UltraWide monitor and needed to run at 2560 x 1080, would I see the same results with the 770 over the 780?

Oh, interesting.

The GTX 770 does actually hold up in many games at 1440p (which is more pixels than 2560x1080) but its a little less consistent than it is at 1080p. The GTX 780 would do so more consistently with higher detail settings. You're in a half-way point between 1080p and 1440p. But I think, maybe, the 780 might be somewhat worth it in your case.

Its hard to be definitive, because very rarely is that resolution benchmarked.

Shucks... It's like do I buy the 770 and be disappointed and stuck with it, or go with the 780 and be happy after spending the extra $200! Decisions, decisions. Thanks for the help, guys.

I hate to tell you to spend more, but I'd have to say if you want to play games like Watch Dogs now, and who-knows-what 1-3 years on, it might be best to err on the side of a bit more power. I have a GTX 770, 4 GB version, and I feel like its at its limit in Watch Dogs; performance is okay (45-60 FPS), but if I had your monitor I might feel differently. This game eats 3.6 GB of VRAM on my system.

If it makes you feel any better, the GTX 780 is only $100 more than the GTX 770 4 GB version, which is probably the one you should use for Watch Dogs at 2560x1080 anyway.

Yikes, so if it eats 3.6gb on your card, it would use less on the 780 2gb because of the performance difference?

Watch Dogs is kind of a special unicorn in its VRAM usage. 3.6 GB on my card with Ultra textures; with high textures its probably much, much easier on my hardware. And games have a tendency to reserve more VRAM than is actually performance-critical.

Every other game I own, 2 GB at most.

The GTX 780, at least the ones I see, has 3 GB of VRAM on a 384-bit (faster) memory bus than my 770. I think its fine in that regard.
