I want to build a $300-$400 machine for a good friend to introduce him to PC gaming. I cannot seem to find much info on the 1gb model of this card.... is 1gb safe for average 1080p gaming? (DOTA, CSGO, Civ 5, and Fallout 4 being what I had in mind.)

for 1080p, 2gb of vram is recommended, especially in FO4.

I wouldn't stick around with the 750 tis with all the deals out right now. You can get a lot more horsepower for a few more dollars. With a $300-$400 build you'll want to put about a third of that budget towards the graphics card for gaming. I'd try to squeeze a nvidia 960 into the budget. You can find some as low as $155.
