Hello,
I'm building a rig mostly for use in Autodesk Maya/Mudbox/3ds Max to work on moderately advanced models and environments, as well as for use in Unreal Engine 4 and for rendering.
However I'm not building it only for those programs, but for games as well (it's not like I can afford a proper workstation PC).
This is what I'm currently planning to buy:
CPU: Xeon e3 1230 v3
MOBO: ASRock H87 PRO4
GPU: GTX 760 WF OC
RAM: Hyper X Savage 1600mhz CL9 2 x 4GB
HDD: WD BLUE 1TB
SDD: Crucial M550 256GB
PSU: Corsair VS 450
I was told that the CUDA technology helps out in programs such as those I will be working with, and also I'm happy to try out Nvidia's card as my old Radeon gave me problems with drivers, disallowing playing one of my favorite games.
However, I'm seeing that the r9 280 has more memory, shading units, wider memory bus and such, and it's currently cheaper than the GTX 760 (WF OC).
So my question is, which will be better for use in the programs I mentioned? Will CUDA be of any help even the r9 280 is better specification-wise?
Will I need to change my PSU if I get the Radeon?
I can't spend more than £600 (about $950), even though I already am above the budget, however I will be getting the SDD later on, so I'm not really looking for more expensive alternatives.
