Hi Guys, I can get a used GTX 770 (OC Edition) for £100. So is it worth going for it or should I go to either new GTX 960 or new GTX 970? I want to play Witcher 3 in its full glory. My PC Spec is AMD 8350 on ASrock 970 Pro3 with Corsair CX750 and 8GB RAM. Thanks

Forget the 960, the 770 beats it hand down:
UserBenchmark: Nvidia GTX 960 vs GTX 770
Effective 3D Gaming GPU Speed: 52.8% vs 60.5%
Nvidia GTX 960 - 23rd / 488
Nvidia GTX 770 - 15th / 488

The 970 is a good option which as mentioned above will pretty much let you max out the settings at 1080p with 60 fps.

UserBenchmark: Nvidia GTX 970 vs GTX 770
Effective 3D Gaming GPU Speed: 84.7% vs 60.5%
Nvidia GTX 970 - 8th / 488
Nvidia GTX 770 - 15th / 488

so on high settings the 970 will give you around 60 fps for £270 or you can play at around 40 fps with the 770 for £100, your call but I would pay the extra for a 970.
I HIGHLY recommend waiting for Computex and E3.

The new 980 Ti and AMD R9 390x, 380, 370 etc are being revealed and go on sale.

This will give you more (better) options and also drive down the price of any 9xx series card you want to buy now.

This is the time to hold and wait briefly, rather than being last through the door on old higher pricing.

So which means that getting GTX 770 for £100 is not worth? and I just want average 30 FPS(will that be enough?) in 1080p

No, getting it, even at a lowish price is not worth it...

IF

you want to achieve the highest settings in witcher, that is.

To be honest you don't seem commited to the idea, as 30FPS isn't really great if you go hard on visuals. It can look ok if you have a gsync monitor however it is almost always better to compromise on settings to get consistent 60 fps. It's the magic mark for a reason.

You asked what is required for "full glory". The answer is a beefy card.

If you will settle for less, less will do. However getting an old 7xx series card now, is probably not a good move for longevity.

If you have patience for a few weeks you will be able to get 9xx series cards at a better price and get close to your desired quality settings in Witcher and other games.

A 770 for 100 isn't too bad. Understand you will not max the game.

Here is a good link to judge for yourself.

Take it with grain of salt. On a nice monitor you can drop a lot of the AA settings and receive a pretty big frame rate boost. This will not be night and day mind you.

As for the price drops mentioned above me.... don't count on much more than 10% drops in price.

I want to add two things:

As such the 770 isn't bad, especially for 100 notes.

With DX12 nearing at a high pace and the first swath of those cards imminent, the timing is bad and can't help but feel you may end up disappointed and upgrading well before you plan to, for various reasons.

I think people often missunderstand the GFX patterns and buy too incrementally/too often, upgrading bit by bit as standards rise.

If you invest a little more now you can get much further ahead in the curve and get into a resonable cycle where you get advantageous buying spots.
