Guys....instead of a gtx 760...i have decided to buy sumthing more future proof for 1080p gaming...i was wondering...whether it cud be r9 280x or the 770. As new features like mantle and nvidia drivers like 337.50 and other graphics software coming up i wanted to see which one is better for just GAMING in the future....And this is an open discussion it wud be really helpful if u guy give a solution as this wud solve other ppl's doubts...Thnx a lot in advanced!!!!!!!

Performance wise, theyre both blow for blow the same. The amd might edge out a few fps better on some games with the gtx better by a few fps on other games. As far as mantle goes, its slightly better at some games, nvidia driver makes it slightly better at other games. But that said, the new direct x12 will be the biggest performance boost to all games that will support it, and that direct x12 will be available for both cards. Nvidia has physics and cuda which isnt available to amd, which benefits nvidia only on that route. But cuda is for workstation type programs, while physics is gaming wise. Again, small benefits. Certain programs take full use of physics and cuda, but some programs fully utilize amd's open (cl/gl/cu cant remember)...

But overall, amd card is great, runs warmer and uses a tad more power, nvidia is more efficient and runs quieter, neither will really effect performance, theyre equal at that.

So, i personally go nvidia as its quiter, more power efficient, and i need cuda. But cant go wrong either way. Just make sure if you go nvidia route you go 4gb not 2gb. I think the 280 is 3gb. Games, non modded games, just started using full 2gb and some now can use up to 3gb. While right now 2gb is still fine, 4 gb should offer less limiting in the future.

As for the amd, make sure you get a good brand with good cooling, as like i said it runs warm. Asus, msi, evga, and gigabyte all make great cooler. Msi lightning is the best, but you'll pay for it, and not worth more than $20 more than a comparable model (which its normally alot more than $20 difference, which is why normally not worth buying but it is the best)

I have evga with their new acx cooler, its great i love it, and ill always go evga 100% from now on. But thats just my personal preference.

but the r9 280x has a 384 bit memory and also has direct x 11.2 compatability......so does this mean its more future proof??

If you want future proof.. Then I would do the ASUS 780ti! But if you can't afford it.. Then I would go with the 770 4gb! The reason I would go with that is because first.. I have had experience with both and was not impressed with the amd.. And second.. The EVGA 770 has 4GB of VRAM. This will be good for "FUTURE" games. I have that exact 770 in rig as I speak. I run 3 1080p 144hz monitors with the 770 4gb.

As for compute differences asked between the amd and nvidia, it depends solely on the specific programs your using. Some take full advantage of certain things. Some/newer ones fully support both amd/nivida offerings. But you want a sole computing card, your looking for amd firepro, nividia (wow something i cant remember). But you'd be looking at workstation class cards. Gaming cards are good for gaming poor for computing. Workstation cards at good at computing and bad at gaming. Titan tried to combine the two, but it still offered low quality performance for computing compared to a $1000 workstation card. The new titan black looks promising, and titan z as well. I cant wait for computing/workstation test/benching comes out for both the titan black and titan z. This fall ill be looking to get either titan black sli or a titan z. I compute far more often than game, yet still game, so dont want to loose that ability.
