My dad just said he wouldn't let me buy the r9 290 for $400 and I'm wondering whether to get the gtx 770, the r9 280x, or the gtx 760. I'm planning on playing games like
crysis 3, Skyrim, Just Cause 2, Payday 2, and Warframe at ultra settings. I have heard that AMD products overheat, therefore reducing life, and I'll want my graphics card to last at least for 6 years (My dad doesn't like me spending money). I can't buy anything higher than these since my dads a cheapo, so which should I get? (I'm probably gonna get the 770 since I'm gonna be playin Crysis 3)

It depends on the game and the situation. There are a couple of games where the 280 is slightly better than the 770, and others where the 770 is better, overall the 770 is considered a bit faster. With current prices the 280x is usually ~$50 cheaper which gives it an edge there.
I've been playing games for 6 months with a i7 4770k (no graphics card cause my dad thinks no graphics card won't make a difference) at lowest settings struggling with games like Just Cause 2, Warframe, and Payday2 with not even 30 fps.
