So I can't decide on either the gtx 770 2gb and r9 280x 3 gb for a two monitor setup. I'm not planning on running both monitors for gaming but one for gaming and one for skype and social media. Help!

Solution
You can't really go wrong with either one for gaming on a single 1080p monitor... I'd say get the cheapest of the two.

GTX 770: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125463&cm_re=gtx_770-_-14-125-463-_-Product
r9 280x: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125490&cm_re=r9_280x-_-14-125-490-_-Product

Those are the cheapest two (non reference) cards on newegg, the r9 280x is $20 cheaper. r9 280x will be better if you ever get a 3rd monitor and play in eyefinity/surround as well (due to the extra gb of ram).

Things to consider:

1. The reference 770 has a 3% advantage over the reference 280x.

2. The nVidia cards have more overclocking headroom.

3. The best of the 770s (MSI NGaming) is a bit expensive today ($349) on newegg ...was $299 few days ago. The Asus one is among the lowest cost outta the box but is set at a very low clock speed so hat may be an issue if not overclocking. The Gigabyte at $309 is attractive pricewise but tends to be a bit noisy.

4. The MSI 280x isn't that much faster than the reference version but it's price at $289 sure is attractive. But the cards run very, very hot ....

Thanks guys! I think I will go with the 770. It may have a 1gb difference but for lower temps and quieter operation I think it is worth it. I don't plan on using more then two monitors anytime soon so 2gb should be good for gaming and skype and and such.
