Hello guys!

I would like to ask your advice about these GPUs. I live in Hungary which means a lot of products are overpriced and I'm on a budget, too. So I would like to get the best GPU which would be able to run most of the games at 1080p 60+FPS all maxed out for about 2 years.

My friends recommend me the 770, but it's more expensive than the 280x. Also I saw videos and they almost have the same performance (1-2 FPS difference).

My main problem is, that the R9 has more VRAM and I don't know if this would give me an advantage over the time against the GTX :S

I also heard screen tearing, bad driver and artifact problems about R9 cards, but I don't say that these can't happen to Nvidia 😀

So which one should I get? Does the extra price for the GTX 770 worth it for a longer run (2 years)? Or because of the more VRAM I should get the other.

I would like to play these games:

+ Sniper Elite 3
+ Battlefield 3 & 4
+ Grid Autosport
+ maybe other games

Or 🙂D😀😀😀😀) should I get a GTX 760 for these games instead?
I'm not planning any recording so Shadowplay isn't important for me!

Thank you very much and sorry for the long post and for my English! Have a nice day!

To OP - you can also wait till the end of the month for the GTX 960 and GTX 960 Ti, they may be cheaper, perform better than the 770 and 280, and may have 3GB VRAM as well. What will be sure is that those 960s will have much lower power consumption than the older cards, so you will save money in the long run. If you are a kid you can tell that to your parents so they could raise your budget a little if the 960 Ti will be a bit more expensive compared to the 280/770.

the Extra vram will help games are starting to use 3gb of vram but imo like the guys said if u can wait go for the GTX960 it will cost around 200-249$ usd mostly 249 from what i heard tho if u can wait go for the R9 280X

Oh, thanks for the answers, but I'm still not concerned. With the 770 I have already reached my maximum budget so only cheaper cards would be suitable for me. The 970 here is ridiculously overpriced (the 760 has the same price here as a brand new 970 in Germany 😛) so I will definetely not choose that one.

My problem with the R9 280x is that I've heard that they have a lot of problems. For example those, which I've mentioned above.

The 770 has almost no problems at all, but it's more expensive than the AMD. For the games, which I would like to play, both cards are perfect. But I don't want to buy a new GPU after a year. That's why I can't choose between the two.

About the 960: I've heard about the 128-bit something. (I don't know what it is. Please explain :S) Soooo if it performs better, than the 770 and if I can wait until the end of the month, then I'll buy it I think.

Thank you for all your answers and please help me choose from these 3!

The bus on the 960 IS 128-bit, so it WILL be slower than desirable, especially as compared to either the 770 or the 280x. It's intended to be for budget performance, not real performance. Personally, I'd go with the 280x since it's cheaper and trades places on performance ranking with the 770 depending on the title. I've got an R9 280 and a 280x, on different systems, with an 8320@4.5Ghz and honestly haven't noticed any significant issues running most titles at high or ultra on a single 1080p monitor.

same i have a (7950 Vapor-x)/R9 280 never had issues on any new games except for unity/watchdogs ubisoft crappy coded games etc..

the only issue was stuttering but they got them fixed after a while anyway

the R9 280X is a 7970 it is a pretty Strong card and if u can get one that can Be overclocked well than Imo go for a R9 280X

Ok! So should I take the R9 280x? Because I've heard that a lot of people issue problems, screen tearing, etc.

I mean is it reliable? Are the drivers good?

I know it's an overclocked 7950, but isn't it old? I would like to buy it for 2 years.

Thank for the answers again!

Btw I will not choose the GTX 960 then...

To stratoFortress - you said that the GTX 970 is overpriced in your country so the GTX 960 Ti will probably be too, so your best choice is the 280x. AMD dirvers are not as bad as you think, I have a friend who plays FC4 on an old 6950 (omega drivers) with no problems.

As I said, originally, all you need to do is look at the model scores I listed for you above. People who say eh, Nvidia sucks, or eh, AMD sucks, are likely to just be immature or inexperienced fanboys who don't know any better or refuse to face the reality which is that Nvidia cards are more expensive, but often perform better due to more developers optimizing for Nvidia cards and Intel CPUs. That doesn't mean AMD cards and CPUs don't perform just as well, it simply depends on whether or not the game or application has been optimized for AMD architecture. And even when it's not, that doesn't mean it stops working, it just means it will be likely to perform a bit further down the scoresheet than a similar Nvidia card which the title HAS been optimized for, but since the average costs are less, you can also afford to buy higher end.

This is why I suggested that you look at the scoring and determine whether or not the titles you are likely to play indicate one architecture or the other realizes a better performance advantage and base your choices on the numbers, not on what somebody's opinion of one brand or the other is. Any card you buy from any of the big name manufacturers, is likely to do exactly as it was intended so long as you have adequate supporting hardware installed that will allow it to perform at it's optimal level.

Damn! I didn't want to make it as the best answer since I still have a question!

Sorry for that! I know I might seem like a mentally disabled, that I can't choose.
But It'll be my first build and I want to make it the best out of this budget 😀

Which is more futureproof? I think it's the R9 because of more VRAM.
What do you think? And does anything has an effect if I have Win 8.1? Because of Directx11.2

If I get a great answer this would be my last question! 😀 😀 😀

Thank you very-very much for your help and patience guys!

get the R9 280X why? coz simply a 7970 Boost with Tahiti TXT core instead of Tahiti XT wich has less power consumption and IF u Overclock it it will beat the
770 in every AMD optimized game and perform on Par or almost as good as the 770

i have a Vapor-x 7950 @ 1300/1900 OC and i can max everything out there except for Assassins creed

also yah the VRAM will Help a lot 2GB is obsolete in if u want to Max out the Textures in open world games like watch dogs on ultra textures takes up 2.5GB

PS: watchdogs is optimized like crap

and u should expect a 1200 give or take Mhz on the core of a R9 280X the memory OC isnt even needed that card has a wide memory bus anyway the only difference between 1575 memory OC and 1900 is 3 mini FPS gain for me

also both cards will have support for DX12 and anything bellow that and no 8.1 has no effect maybe a couble of fps gains over Win7

I personally would go with the 280x over the 770 simply for the fact that the scores are pretty even, but the 280x has a 384bit memory bus versus the 256bit bus on the 770 and when paired with additional 1GB of VRAM is likely beneficial on higher resolutions or with multiple displays.

THANK YOU VERY-VERY-VERY MUCH GUYS FOR YOUR HELP AND PETIENCE!!!!

I think I'll choose the R9 280x. I hope that +1 GB VRAM will have an advantage, and I'll not be disappointed that I chose tha AMD.

I still have a little time to decide, but I feel that I'm concerned 😀
I hope I won't have to worry because of artifacts and drivers, etc.

Thank you again, and have a nice day!!!
