GTX 780 idle temp mystery...

Hello gentlemen, i will cut right to the chase on this one.

SO, I've done a little digging around online and professional review of the gtx 780 say that it idle at a temperature of 30-33 degrees celsius. Mine however idles at 40 degrees celsius, and i am not quite sure why this is the case.

What I want to ask is, could anyone point out any variables that could be influencing this idle temperature on my GPU?

I certainly do not think it has anything to do with room temperature, however my computer is kind of crammed under my desk. (here's a picture http://i.imgur.com/KyQxFCl.jpg)

Specs wise, I have a i7 2700k, a more than sufficient corsair 750w psu.

I'd appreciate your guyses feedbacks 😀

Maybe high ambient temps? All that really matters is load temps.

I've got the reference cooler like you and mine idles around 40C with all case fans off. I contacted Nvidia about temperatures before (to see how hot I could let it run), I guess GK110 idles hot because they said 'Without graphics load, the temperature should be 40'C to 50'C.'

So totally fine.

im not sure man, ive been looking at benchamarks as well and it seems like my card is under performing as well, i think there might be a power supply fault here

Is your processor overclocked? You'll need it to be.

i havent oc'd it, it is still at its standard 3.5, is ocing it really have to be done? some of the benchmark cpus are running at 3.3ghs and get better benchmarks

Funny how with a 3570K at 4.5Ghz I'm still getting 100% CPU utilization in a few games and frame rates hardly better than my old card. I agree total bollox.

I also am rocking a 3570K with a gtx 770, not even overclocked and i never reach 100% CPU utilization, telll me what games you're on about because i think you have a virus.

780. Go to any of the big cities and watch the framerate fall, that said, I do have alot of mods installed. Either way BF3 does the same thing, drops to 60-70FPS, CPU near 100% on all cores.

I have CPU clock ratio monitoring enabled in the OSD too, sticks to 4.5.

Oh ok, i guess you're using a 120mhz monitor for 120fps? 60fps on a 60mhz monitor is enough for me and looks as smooth as anything i could wish for, althou i do understand 60fps on a 120hz monitor can not feel as smooth.

I run my GTX 780 factory overclocked, and overclocked some more myself with just the stock cooler. And it runs at 33 degrees Celsius when idle. Maybe some other components in your case generate a lot of heat so the GPU gets hotter too.

I've found that running shadowplay when you're not playing a game, will cause my gtx 780 to reach temperatures of 49C to 55C even when idle. I turned shadowplay off and the temps went down to around 27C & 29C barely touching 30C. You may want to check if you have shadowplay running in geforce experience.

shadowplay is a really funky setting. but if you google it it seems to be a known issue man. try it out.

I found that sometimes having more than one monitor running cause the idle temp to be in the 40s.

my 780 idles at around 34 - 40 depending on how long I have my PC on for and at load the most ive got is around 57, I wouldn't care much about idle temp but would be worried if load temps go past 70

edit: installed msi gaming app and temps are down to about 24-27c :0

@OP is your card still idling at high temps? if so, try removing the screws that hold the GPU off. let the card just hang without the screws. my card was idling at 40-50 cuz there was alot of tension caused by the screws being too tight and it was pushing the card towards the mobo. alot of ppl tend to tighten the screws to avoid that slight slouch or trying to give it more rigidity. so it causes heat to build up in the area where the hdmi/dvi is.
